OCD ?WHAT IS IT?In CBT, people work with a therapist to look at patterns of thinking(cognition) and acting (behaviour) that are making them more likely tohave problems with anxiety, or are keeping them from improving oncethey become anxious. Once these patterns are recognised, then theperson can make changes to replace these patterns with ones thatreduce anxiety and improve coping. It can be conducted in individualmeetings with a therapist, or in groups. Treatment length can vary, butis usually conducted over four to 24 weekly sessions. CBT is oftencombined with Behaviour Therapy (see page 27).HOW IS IT MEANT TO WORK?CBT is thought to work by helping people to recognise patterns in theirthinking and behaviour that make them more vulnerable to anxiety. For example, thinking that is focused on threats and dangers is oftenlinked with anxiety. In CBT, the person works to change these patternsto use more realistic and problem-solving thinking. As well, anxiety isoften increased when a person actively avoids things of which he/sheis afraid. Learning to face up to situations that are anxiety-provoking isalso often helpful.DOES IT WORK?CBT has been assessed in a large number of high-quality studies. It has been applied to all the anxiety disorders covered in this bookand has been found to be effective. A statistical pooling of data from allthese studies showed that CBT is one of the best treatments availablefor anxiety disorders.WHAT IS IT?DMT combines expressive dancing with discussion of a person’s lifedifficulties. A DMT session usually involves a warm-up and a period ofexpressive dancing or movement. This is followed by discussion of theperson’s feeling and thoughts about the experience and how it relatesto his/her life situation.HOW IS IT MEANT TO WORK?DMT is based on the idea that the body and mind interact. It is thoughtthat a change in the way someone moves will have an effect on theirpatterns of feeling and thinking. It is also assumed that dancing andmovement may help to improve the relationship between the personand the therapist, and may help the person to express feelings of whichhe/she isn’t otherwise aware. Learning to move in new ways may helppeople to discover new ways of expressing themselves and to solveproblems.DOES IT WORK?DMT has not yet been properly evaluated in well-designed studies. There are only reports of treatments with individual cases.ARE THERE ANY RISKS?There are no known risks.RECOMMENDATIONWe do not yet know if DMT works for anxiety disorders.ARE THERE ANY RISKS?There are no known risks.RECOMMENDATIONCBT is a highly recommended treatment for all anxiety disorders.29
