Gabrielajust received her Master’s Degree <strong>in</strong>children’s and family m<strong>in</strong>istry fromBethel Sem<strong>in</strong>ary. Through this program,she has been able to conduct <strong>in</strong>-depthacademic study of many aspects ofm<strong>in</strong>istry to children and families <strong>in</strong> whichshe and Nathan are so <strong>in</strong>volved andwhich will be beneficial to their ongo<strong>in</strong>gwork there.<strong>The</strong> focus on families is becom<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly vital to shar<strong>in</strong>g the faith <strong>in</strong>Albania. Through the venue of specialevents and activities for children, entirefamilies are be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vited to and engaged<strong>in</strong> these outreaches of the Church. In responseto efforts like these, many womenhave also been attend<strong>in</strong>g regular women’sgroups meet<strong>in</strong>gs that Gabriela leads.In February, the Hoppes also participated<strong>in</strong> International Marriage Week <strong>in</strong>Albania. <strong>The</strong>y conducted <strong>in</strong>terviews anddistributed 40,000 copies of a brochureconta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g stories and <strong>in</strong>formation aboutthe value of marriage.This Pascha, Anastasia PamelaBarksdale will beg<strong>in</strong> her 6th year as amissionary <strong>in</strong> Albania, teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Christian</strong>Education at the Resurrection ofChrist <strong>The</strong>ological Academy <strong>in</strong> Durres,offer<strong>in</strong>g campus m<strong>in</strong>istry Bible studiesand various lectures, sem<strong>in</strong>ars, andtra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, as well as cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to workwith Archbishop Anastasios at theArchdiocese of Tirana. Many of Anastasia’s<strong>Christian</strong> Education students havebegun to return to their villages to offercatechism classes and day camps whilethey are still <strong>in</strong> school. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Christian</strong>Education Resource Center that she beganthree years ago has expanded fromfive to 12 sites and reaches out to 260children.Georgia Bendo, <strong>in</strong> her 9th year as amissionary, cont<strong>in</strong>ues teach<strong>in</strong>g Englishat the Church's Logos University andProtagonist School. She also leads alarge catechism group of middle schoolchildren at the school. <strong>The</strong> Farah Foundationgrant which she acquired thisyear is strengthen<strong>in</strong>g the English andCatechism programs. She plans to closethe year by tak<strong>in</strong>g 40 of the children ona pilgrimage to the icon museum andchurches of Berati. In November herhusband, Deacon Anastasi, was honoredto become the Archdeacon for HisBeatitude. <strong>The</strong>ir children, Vasili and Evdoxia,are both well and excitedly await<strong>in</strong>ga new baby sibl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> July! CURRENT NEEDSTirana, Albania: A long-term missionary isneeded to work at the Protagonist School.MoldovaOCMC Missionary <strong>Christian</strong> Semonwas <strong>in</strong>vited by the Association of<strong>Orthodox</strong> Youth-Iasi (ATOR) to go toPortugal to visit Romanian youth <strong>in</strong>Lisbon. While <strong>in</strong> Portugal, she encouragedthe youth to unite with one another as achurch youth group.Follow<strong>in</strong>g the visit to Portugal, Christ<strong>in</strong>ahelped welcome priests from Romania toMoldova who gave talks on the philosophical,poetical, and <strong>Christian</strong> perspectives ofwomen. <strong>The</strong>se priests delivered a powerfulmessage about the role, value, and honorof women <strong>in</strong> society and <strong>in</strong> the Church toMoldovan youth and young adults.Christ<strong>in</strong>a also m<strong>in</strong>istered to girls at ahalf-way house by work<strong>in</strong>g to empowerthe leadership of their educators. She hashelped to plan and raise support for theirarts and crafts. Through these activities,they made Christmas cards, wreaths,flower brooches, and hair decorationswhich the girls sold to pay for an upcom<strong>in</strong>gpilgrimage to a local monastery.Christ<strong>in</strong>a’s primary focus <strong>in</strong> Moldova hasbeen to help <strong>in</strong>itiate susta<strong>in</strong>able youthprograms and m<strong>in</strong>istries, so please prayfor the furtherance of this work.MongoliaAs a new mission field for the OCMC,Mongolia has had its typical share ofchallenges. <strong>The</strong> country has recently rewrittentheir laws on visa requirementswhich have forced our missionaries to"scramble" to secure status as studentsor employees <strong>in</strong> order to rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> thecountry for any length of time. One of ourmissionaries, the Monk Job, has secureda student visa which he will use to learnthe Mongolian language at a privateschool near the church <strong>in</strong> Ulaanbaatar (animportant part of any new missionary’s<strong>in</strong>itial assignment).OCMC Missionary Kurt Br<strong>in</strong>gerud hasbeen teach<strong>in</strong>g English at a private <strong>in</strong>stitutewhich has enabled him to obta<strong>in</strong>his necessary visa. He is also teach<strong>in</strong>ga class at the Holy Tr<strong>in</strong>ity parish on theJapanese language to a small group ofstudents. Ancutais currently serv<strong>in</strong>g around 40 familiesthrough the PTFC by provid<strong>in</strong>g food, cloth<strong>in</strong>g,and daycare assistance so that themothers can ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a safe and securehousehold for their newborn and youngchildren. <strong>The</strong> PTFC also provides counsel<strong>in</strong>gfor the young mothers who need a newchance <strong>in</strong> life.<strong>The</strong> St. Dimitrie Program, managed byFloyd, has the primary mission of develop<strong>in</strong>gand ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g counsel<strong>in</strong>g programsdedicated to help<strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong> Romaniaovercome alcoholism and drug addiction.Through the St. Dimitrie Program, Floydhas traveled to <strong>Tanzania</strong> and to St. Herman’sSem<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong> Alaska to help establishnew chapters of the program to m<strong>in</strong>ister tothose struggl<strong>in</strong>g with addictions. He will bereturn<strong>in</strong>g to St. Herman’s this fall.<strong>Tanzania</strong>On March 17, 2013, OCMC MissionariesJames and Daphne Hargrave welcomedtheir son Peter Henry <strong>in</strong>to the world.Maria Roeber and Felice Stewart, fellowMissionaries to <strong>Tanzania</strong>, accompaniedthe Hargraves to Kampala, Uganda,for Peter Henry’s birth. James andDaphne look forward to return<strong>in</strong>gsoon to <strong>Tanzania</strong> and cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g theirm<strong>in</strong>istry with the Holy Archdiocese ofMwanza.Maria and Felice both received their<strong>Tanzania</strong>n nurs<strong>in</strong>g licenses. Maria eagerlybegan volunteer<strong>in</strong>g as a laborand delivery nurse at a hospital <strong>in</strong>Bukoba. She assisted many labor<strong>in</strong>gwomen with the births of their babies.She also f<strong>in</strong>ished up her work with the<strong>Orthodox</strong> Health Centre, turn<strong>in</strong>g overthe majority of adm<strong>in</strong>istrative duties tolocal staff. Maria is complet<strong>in</strong>g her twoyearterm of service this spr<strong>in</strong>g and isapply<strong>in</strong>g to nurse-midwifery schools <strong>in</strong>the US. She hopes to return to the missionfield after complet<strong>in</strong>g her studies.Felice began some <strong>in</strong>dividualcounsel<strong>in</strong>g and saw the addictionsmeet<strong>in</strong>gs expand thanks to referralsthat came through the health centre.Felice and local AA members conducteda "demonstration" meet<strong>in</strong>gthat resulted <strong>in</strong> two priests start<strong>in</strong>gAA meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> their villages. Feliceis also near<strong>in</strong>g the completion of hercurrent term of service <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tanzania</strong>and is evaluat<strong>in</strong>g her future options,as she desires to cont<strong>in</strong>ue serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>the mission field.GuatemalaFr. John and Presbytera AlexandraChakos are now serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>Guatemala and are very <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> arange of mission activities associatedwith serv<strong>in</strong>g an historic number ofnew converts to the faith. Fr. Johnis committed to help<strong>in</strong>g providea program for catechiz<strong>in</strong>g tens ofthousands of converts and help<strong>in</strong>g toestablish the first <strong>Orthodox</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>aryprogram <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America that mustnow tra<strong>in</strong> hundreds of new clergy toserve this great <strong>in</strong>flux of <strong>in</strong>digenouspeople.Fr. David and Matushka RozanneRucker will also be jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> thefield later this year through their newroles as Mission Specialists with theOCMC and to help support this greateffort and strengthen the rapidlygrow<strong>in</strong>gChurch <strong>in</strong> Central America.19
