Carlo, MD, FAAPDr. Carlo is the Edwin M. Dix<strong>on</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pediatrics andDirector <strong>of</strong> the Ne<strong>on</strong>atology Divisi<strong>on</strong> at the University <strong>of</strong>Alabama at Birmingham. He joined UAB in 1990, and waspreviously the associate director <strong>of</strong> the ne<strong>on</strong>atal intensivecare unit at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland,Ohio. Dr. Carlo is a renowned authority <strong>on</strong> mechanicalventilati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> ne<strong>on</strong>ates with severe respiratory failure. Hehas led numerous research studies focusing <strong>on</strong> ne<strong>on</strong>ates andhas served as a lead investigator <strong>of</strong> the Ne<strong>on</strong>atal ResearchNetwork, a multi-center collaborative research effortc<strong>on</strong>tinuously funded at UAB by the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute <strong>of</strong> ChildHealth and Human Development for the past 14 years.Since 2003, he has been a principal investigator in the NIHGlobal Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research(GN). Through the GN, as well as his own innovative researchprojects, Dr. Carlo has developed a research network withparticipating countries including Zambia, India, DemocraticRepublic <strong>of</strong> C<strong>on</strong>go, Kenya, Pakistan, Guatemala, and Argentina.At UAB, Dr. Carlo is an active mentor to undergraduate andgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He is a member<strong>of</strong> numerous pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al organizati<strong>on</strong>s, including the Societyfor Pediatric Research, the <strong>American</strong> Pediatric Society, andthe <strong>Perinatal</strong> Research Society.Special Coding SeminarThis seminar is designed to instruct ne<strong>on</strong>atologists aboutCPT codes and how they are used in daily practice. It willupdate participants <strong>on</strong> the new changes in CPT and ICD-10codes as they apply to ne<strong>on</strong>atology. Applicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> codesto various patient c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s and situati<strong>on</strong>s will be exploredusing audience resp<strong>on</strong>se system (ARS) technology. Discussi<strong>on</strong>will include recommendati<strong>on</strong>s from the audience <strong>on</strong> theneeds and limitati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the current codes. The purpose<strong>of</strong> this pre-workshop exercise is to illustrate and explainsome <strong>of</strong> the more basic codes that should be well understoodby ne<strong>on</strong>atologists. This will free up more time during theseminar for review and discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> vignettes involving moresophisticated scenarios, which will explore various nuances<strong>of</strong> coding in the field <strong>of</strong> ne<strong>on</strong>atology.Blended LearningBlended learning – the mixing <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent and ideas derivedfrom different resources, in various formats, and at differenttimes, into an integrated whole – will be facilitated throughrecommended pre-c<strong>on</strong>ference readings, survey resp<strong>on</strong>sesfrom participants based <strong>on</strong> meeting topics, audienceresp<strong>on</strong>se utilizati<strong>on</strong> during the c<strong>on</strong>ference, and coordinati<strong>on</strong>with the faculty.
