The dwarvesrushed out of their great gate; but therewas the dragon waiting for them. Noneescaped that way. The river rushed up insteam and a fog fell on Dale, and in thefog the dragon came on them anddestroyed most of the warriors—the usualunhappy story, it was only too common inthose days. Then he went back and creptin through the Front Gate and routed outall the halls, and lanes, and tunnels, alleys,cellars, mansions and passages. After that
