How aboutthe black teachers who have been infusing African Americanhistory into whatever course they've taught for thepast 100 years? Do they not deserve credit for suchcourageous acts. And the many, many African Americansand Africans from throughout the Diaspora who foughtto assure an historical record inclusive of people ofAfrican ascent. Should their deeds not be remembered?Tom Feelings' The Middle PassageCaptures HistoryTom Feelings's role in producing textbooks in Africa,South America and the United States should never be forgotten. And if you do not have a copy of his book, MiddlePassage in your classroom, you may very well wantto do so. Powerful history. Dr. Woodson and the Associationfor the Study of Negro Life and History had anAfrican American woman, Lois Mailou Jones Pierre-Noel illustrating books published by Woodson's independentblack publishing company prior to the birth ofTom Feelings. The noted children and adult book illustrator, TomFeelings, explains what led him to do such powerfulblack visual history: "I was able to combine those monochromatickinds of muted colors that projected sorrowwith the rhythmic movement and luminous light that projectedjoy in the work that I did when I was in Africa andwhen I came back. What I am trying to do is what musicdoes -- the blues, jazz -- to capture movement andrhythm moving through the pictures so that you saw boththings, the sorrow and the joy."..FeelingsWe really need to draw more effectively upon theartist, illustrator and graphic designer Tom Feelings’ wisdomas imparted through written and visual texts. He explainshis objective in doing that magna/magnum opus,The Middle Passage: " The Middle Passage is an adultpicture book. I've learned how to reach children. WhatI'm trying to do now is to reach that place in the adultwhich is the child open to the truth, if the person who istelling truth shows that they love them... I really do believethat it's telling a good friend something you knowthey don't want to hear. They might even stop beingBrown: House scholarshipprogram now openState Rep. Woodson and Wesley Build African AmericanHistory MovementIt is to the credit of pioneer African American historianDr. Carter G Woodson, that he and a small group ofprogressive thinking people organized The Associationfor the Study of African American Life and History at theWabash Avenue YMCA in Chicago on 9 September1915, while engaged in research and writing at the Universityof Chicago where he earned both his Bachelorand Masters of Art degree in history. Woodson earnedhis doctorate in history at Harvard University in 1912.As a recent graduate of Harvard University he soughtmembership into the Harvard Club of Washington, D.C.When they learned that Woodson was a Black man hismembership in the Harvard Club located in the nation'scapitol was canceled. The Education of The Negro Prior To 1861Undaunted by acts of whiteness, Woodson continued todemocratize knowledge of Black History. In order tomore effectively popularize the history of African peoplein the United States, he took out a loan to establish an independentblack publishing company and the first titlewas The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861. He alsoestablished the first scholarly history journal by Blacks, the Journal of Negro History. By 1918, the AssociatedPublishers brought out Woodson's A Century of NegroMigration. One year later, the Journal of Negro Historybecame self-supporting. Woodson Became Dean ofHoward University's College of Liberal Arts and a Professorof History at the noted institution from 1919-20but his employment was terminated in 1920 due to hisSpongeBobBig Daddy aac (1999,Comedy) Adam Sandler.Undercover Boss: BajaFresh (CC)NCIS: Trojan Horse (CC)Bloopers af How MetMotherWendell &VinnieSee DadRunSilver Rush: Curse of theMantola (CC)Shake It Up!(CC)The Hangover aaac (2009, Comedy) BradleyCooper. The aim here is to supply alsothe need of schools long since desiring such a work inhandy form with adequate references for those stimulatedto more advanced study."Fifty years after its initial publication and at theheight of the Black Studies Movement led by AfricanAmerican students all over the United States (high schoolthrough university) Dr. Charles H. Wesley (historian whoworked closely with Woodson wrote, "The demand foradditional copies of this volume has been so great thatthis Edition has been authorized by the Association forthe Study of Negro Life and History and issued by TheAssociated Publishers. Fourteen years have passed sincethe last edition. These years have witnessed the mostrapid changes of history in the life and status of thedarker peoples in the United States and in the areasabroad. With the momentum of changes increasing sorapidly, and with the development of our nation into adominant world power. Fully cognizant of the changingrole of Africans in society globally and the inadequacy oftextbooks in use, Dr. Wesley reiterated the central role tobe played by African American professional historians:"Good texts in the general history of the United Statesare available for use, but the neglects, innuendoes andomissions concerning the people of color are disturbingto students of human relations. This edition has beenplanned to give correction to these partial views of thehistory, and culture of the darker people, so that the resultingpicture can be truthful and well rounded."This is the same Dr. Charles H. Wesley who asChairman of the History Department at Howard Universitybrought a young African specialist from HarvardUniversity to pioneer a course in African Civilization. This was none other than William Leo Hansberry. Dr.Wesley explained to me how he introduced students inthe history department to Hansberry's pioneer courses byhaving Hansberrry to lecture in his own popular coursesand thereby interesting many students to take Nile Valleyand other African History Courses taught by Hansberry. It is in this context that Black scholars establishedNegro History Week in 1926 and chose the month ofFebruary to do so.
