Tooth loss may occur. Scalp andface numbness is common, especially after surgery. This mayor may not get better with time. Bruising and swelling alwaysoccur <strong>to</strong> some degree.Major complications may require surgery or a hospital stay.More severe infections may occur, especially if distrac<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong>move bone are used. Severe bleeding may need bloodtransfusions or more surgery. Double vision and other visionproblems may occur that may need eye surgery. Blindness isextremely rare. Brain damage and death are also extremelyrare. Fortunately, with the multi-team approach that mostcraniofacial centers have, complications are kept <strong>to</strong> aminimum.Remember, new advances and procedures concerning <strong>Apert</strong>syndrome are constantly being developed, so ask questionsand be an advocate for your child!5
