MAPLE TREE-MENDOUS!Early Vermont settlers cleared the land to make potash, to create roomfor grazing, and to build cabins. By the late 1800s, trees covered lessthan a third of the state. Today, most of the forest has grown back andmore than three-quarters of Vermont’s land is forested. Our state tree isthe sugar maple and maple sugaring is a large industry in Vermont. Peopletap sugar maple trees for sap that is removed and boiled down to create sweetmaple syrup. Forty gallons of sap make one gallon of syrup!
