Highlighting the theme of renewal andregeneration, organic forms integrate with the culturalobject—in this case, the boat—to explore humanity’sveneration of nature in contrast with its destruction ofnature through technology.Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts—Canada’s oldest national organisation of professionalartists—Laurie Rolland has shown her work fromthe World Ceramic Biennale in Korea to the GardinerMuseum in Toronto (and many points in between.)Known for her explorations of texture as much as for herexplorations of the concept of duality, Rolland’s work hasbeen appreciated the world over. In fact, the first threepartpiece in the Regeneration series lives in the CanadianEmbassy in Rome, purchased by the foreign acquisitionscommittee.Rolland has characterised Life, Death and Rebirth asconcepts in the works made for the Regeneration show atthe Gallery of BC Ceramics. Using colour and texture toexpress these concepts, the bold and the subtle combineto express growth, skeletal remains and fecundity.A stunning exhibition worth visiting, Regenerationshows at the Gallery until July 30.
