final words / from our readersThanks for volunteers and DVDGlenmary Farm volunteers, managers a blessing; new DVD does ‘outstanding’ jobvolunteers a ‘blessing’the glenmary challenge alwayshas so much about thepriests and brothers that I havehad the pleasure of knowing overthe years.Who would have thought thata visit from Glenmary Farm volunteersover 20 years ago wouldhave turned into a life-changingevent?These 20-plus years later, the volunteers are still visiting.I’ve had the pleasure of having10,000 volunteers at my home, not counting the many otherswho have returned to visitagain.I am very blessed to havethese fine young people and theircounselors in my life. They haveoffered their friendship and theirtime. They have done many kindthings to help me around myfarm. At almost 91 years old, Iam thriving on the love and serviceof the Glenmary Farm managersand volunteers.I am looking forward to manymore visits and to the love andlaughter.Edith “Wild Woman” SmithVanceburg, Ky.One from Scratch winsthank you so much for sendingus (Glenmary’s new DVD) TheJoy and Challenge of Mission. That title surely fits. (See storyon page 7.)We were members of two missionchurches in Mt. Vernon andPittsburg, Texas, and knew howblessed we were to have discoveredGlenmary. It is sometimes difficult to explainFather Bishop’s concept, but this DVD does an outstandingjob from the opening scenelead in: Text goes here and here and herefarm Visitors: Edith “Wild Woman” Smith, center, hasshared her knowledge and love of the Appalachian culturewith Glenmary Farm volunteers for over 20 years.to all the comments by Glenmariansand lay workers. We werealso pleased to see “our” new menshare why they love Glenmary. We compare Glenmary to makinga cake from scratch versuspurchasing one from the grocery. The one from scratch wins everytime. We would rather worship ina Glenmary mission church thanany cathedral in the world. If folks wonder what God isup to, just look at Glenmary andyour question is answered. We are so proud to be a part ofGlenmary.Jim and Donna PowellHamilton, Ohiocorrectionthe “then & now” feature inthe Winter 2010 Glenmary Challengestated that “people of Vietnamesedescent comprise only9 percent of the Catholic populationin the United States, butVietnamese men currently makeup 12 percent of the Americanseminary population.”Glenmary Father Bob Daltoncaught the error in those statistics!Vietnamese Catholics makeup 1 percent of the Catholic population, not 9 percent. And 12 percentof college-level seminariansare Asian, the majority of whomare Vietnamese. These numbers are, accordingto Father Bob, “still a great tributeto what those of Vietnameseheritage have contributed to thelife of the Catholic Church in theUnited States.”Readers’ Views welcome!
