<strong>Venous</strong> Insufficiency The long saphenous vein and its tributaries are the ones that most often form varicose veins. Retrograde flow through the superficial venous system occurs when venous valve no longer perform their usual function. Direct injury or superficial phlebitis may cause primary valve failure.
