Guide to <strong>the</strong> Main Shrine RoomThe shrine room was established in 1984 by His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen <strong>Sakya</strong>.CONSECRATIONS<strong>Sakya</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> has been consecrated by many lamas, including His Holiness The FourteenthDalai Lama, His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen <strong>Sakya</strong>, and His Holiness <strong>Sakya</strong> Trizin.MONASTERY REMODELINGUnder <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen <strong>Sakya</strong>, <strong>the</strong> remodeling <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sakya</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> beganwhen <strong>the</strong> building was purchased in 1984. The work has been accomplished thanks to donationsfrom faithful patrons, <strong>Monastery</strong> members, and <strong>the</strong> Head Lama’s family members. Every Saturday,members and friends volunteer to assist with <strong>the</strong> upkeep <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> and any currentprojects.THE MAIN SHRINEUpon entering <strong>the</strong> Shrine Room, you will see a triple life-size statue <strong>of</strong> Shakyamuni Buddha. Hisright hand touches <strong>the</strong> earth in <strong>the</strong> “Demon Vanquishing” or “Earth Touching” mudra and his lefthand in <strong>the</strong> meditation position holds his alms bowl.To <strong>the</strong> Buddha’s far right is <strong>the</strong> life-size statue <strong>of</strong> Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092-1158), founder <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Sakya</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tibetan</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> and progenitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sakya</strong>-Khön lineage <strong>of</strong> lamas. Hisright hand is in <strong>the</strong> “Giving” mudra, his left holds <strong>the</strong> stem <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lotus, symbolizing compassion and<strong>the</strong> Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.On <strong>the</strong> Buddha’s far left is <strong>Sakya</strong> Pandita (1182-1251), <strong>the</strong> grandson <strong>of</strong> Sachen Kunga Nyingpo.Page 13Short Overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tibetan</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong>5
