NOV/DEC 2010 ■ For Parents, Educators & Students ■ <strong>Education</strong> updateTeachers College Calls Attention to Nutrition <strong>Education</strong>President Susan FuhrmanBy Judith AquinoThis year’s Dewey Circle Reception— a ceremony honoring donors toTeachers College, Columbia University— shined a spotlight on healthy eatingand the value of nutrition awareness.“Teachers College invented nutritioneducation a century ago,” said SusanFuhrman, president of Teachers College.“In the 1970s and ’80s, long before thecurrent food movement came to globalconsciousness, TC faculty memberswere sounding the cry for a sustainablefood system that supported humanhealth and local environments.”Childhood obesity (a body mass indexabove the 95th percentile) has more thantripled in the past 30 years, accordingto the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention. The prevalence of obesityamong children aged 6 to 11 increasedfrom 6.5 percent in 1980 to 19.6 percentin 2008. The prevalence of obesityamong adolescents aged 12 to 19increased from 5 percent to 18.1 percent.Surrounded by edible displays ofcarrots, celery, peppers and other vegetables,guests at the Dewey CircleReception mingled on the rooftop gardenof Tishman Speyer headquarters atRockefeller Plaza.
