Barolo, Dolcetto & Moscato
Programme for small groups
September – October 2015
Total immersion into the flavours, scents and colours
of the Langhe (the region of Piedmont), a unique land of
rolling hills, traditional cuisine, excellent wines and
everything else this place has to offer.

DAY 1: Arrival in the Langhe Wine Region
Arrival and check-in. Time permitting, explore the region, and finish
the day with a dinner at your tenuta.
DAY 2: The vineyards and Alba
Dinner at a typical trattoria with spectacular views over the
vineyards. The restaurant serves rich dinner so that you could taste
various local dishes and choose your favourite one.
DAY 3: Asti, Canelli and the undergound
cathedrals
Today visit the Monferrato Wine Region, and in particular – the
Canelli underground cathedrals (on Unesco list since 2014), where
the Italian sparkling wine was born. See the labyrinth of the
passageways where Asti Spumante is kept, under the streets of
Canelli! Of course, finish the visit with a wine tasting.
Lunch in a local winery (so-called enoteca). In the afternoon visit
the fascinating Asti, rich in cultural heritage. Admire the cathedral,
one of the most important gothic churches in the region. Free
dinner today, to choose one of the traditional restaurants.
DAY 4: Where Dolcetto comes from
In the morning meet your local guide and drive to Barolo, a
pretty town where the famous Barolo wine was born. Explore
the town on your own (we suggest the interactive WiMu Wine
Museum, situated in the heart of the town). Afterwards, you
will visit an excellent wine cellar to taste the wines. Free time
for lunch.
Then reach the Grinzane Cavour castle to admire some
beautiful views (the Count Camillo Benso Cavour was actually
the owner of the fortification (the museum can be visited)).
Afterwards, departure to Alba, the town of the “hundred
towers”, to have a stroll through the picturesque old town, home
of the International Truffle Fair.
Alta Langa (the
southern part of the
Langhe) is the
destination of the day –
this is where the red
wine dolcetto comes
from.
The tour begins with a
visit of an excellent wine cellar – Podere Enaudi in Dogliani (and of
course taste the wine).
In the afternoon reach the amazing Vicoforte Sanctuary, a triumph
of architecture thanks to its enormous elliptical cupola, one of the
largest of the kind. Dinner not included – why not dine directly at
the hotel?

DAY 1: Arrival in Piedmont
Arrival and check-in in the charming 3*, located in a historical
mansion, equipped with modern comforts.
Dinner at an excellent restaurant, located in the same complex –
only local cuisine in a complete tune with the Slow Food philosophy,
and selected products.
DAY 2: Alba, Neive and the Truffles
The first day is dedicated to Alba and the truffles. Alba, the
charming medieval town, is famous for the medieval towers,
wines, and the truffles! If visiting Alba starting from the 10 th
of October, do not miss the International Truffle Fair, each
year housed in the centre of the place.
Proceed to Nieve, lying between the Langhe and Monferrato
wine regions. It has been declared “one of the most beautiful
borgos (villages) in Italy”.
Just a short drive from Alba meet the truffle searching dogs!
DAY 3: Barolo and Merenda Sinòira
On this day, explore the Langhe Region. The sun and the gente
hills have made this region famous as it gives excellent wines –
Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Dolcetto. The winding roads
and the landscape creates an idyllic atmosphere.
See Barolo, a small village that gave the name to the King of
Wines. Visit the Enoteca Regionale di Barolo, the Barolo
Regional Winery. Proceed to Dogliani, one of the biggest villages
in the region, strategically located between Barolo and the
Tanaro Valley. Its wine is Dolcetto..
Then be welcomes at a wine cellar in the Langhe Region - learn
about the wine production methods – and taste them as well!
End the day with Merenda Sinoira, a purely Piedmont’s tradition
– a pre-dinner (formerly, a peasants’) meal, which, given the
amount of food may also substitute it). Cheese, ham, and
various local specialties accompanied by excellent (5!) local
wines.

Your hotel
A trifulao (a truffle hunter) will demonstrate you how the
professional dogs do the job.
Then taste various products with truffle (accompanied with
the local wine).
The hotel, located in the Langhe Region near Alba, is a typical
housing - a historical mansion, characterized by the warm
atmosphere that only a cosy and familiar environment can offer.
Dinner at a typical trattoria, where you will have the chance
to taste some of the well-known dishes, such as the fresh
pasta tajarin, or the battuta al fassone, chopped steak
tartare.

DAY 1: Arrival in Tuscany
Arrival and check-in. Upon wish, dinner at your hotel with traditional Tuscan
dishes – apart from the wines, Tuscany boasts a renowned cuisine.
In the afternoon, see Volterra, another evocative hilltop town. A particular
feature of the place – alabaster workshops. It has become a tradition of
the place (do some window shopping to see a great variety of objects
made out of this material – sculptures, vases, etc).
DAY 2: The Chianti Road (la Strada del Chianti)
Reach Greve in Chianti – “the gate of Chianti”- pass though it and enter the
magic world of vineyards, curvy roads and ancient walled villages. Visit the
small town of the characteristic porticoes. Have lunch at the Butcher’s! (a
historical butcher shop where you will find only typical products).
Then drive towards Radda in Chianti – a village, surrounded by cypresses and
vineyards that too lies in the Chianti Classico area. It has medieval origins (see
the old town walls!)
Last but not least – visit a typical “fattoria” that boasts an excellent wine
cellar. Taste the wines such as the Vernaccia and Chianti and enjoy a typical
dinner (local cold cuts and cheeses, and biological pasta).
DAY 3: San Gimignano and Volterra
San Gimignano – an important Unesco world heritage site - is the first stop of
today. The village boasts a fascinating architecture (see the towers, the
symbol of the place!) and rich evidence of the past times.
Visit a wine cellar, learn about the wine production methods, and enjoy the
wines accompanied by cold snacks (bruschettas and cold cuts).
Looking forward to the wine tasting (incl. Chianti, Vernaccia di San
Gimignano and Super Tuscan) reach an outstanding Tenuta (a winery) for
a visit.
Dine at a local agriturismo – only rigorously selected local products!
DAY 4: Siena and Monteriggioni
Do not miss Siena – a perfect place to step back in time and enjoy Tuscany
to the fullest. Siena is of course famous mostly for its Palio, the horse run
held in the Piazza del Campo, dominated by the red Palazzo and the tower
– Torre dei Mangia. Today its centre is free of traffic, which underlines its
medieval character.
Proceed to Monteriggioni, a perfectly walled village – one of the most
intact villages of the kind in Italy, and visit an excellent wine cellar,
followed by a tasting of wine and typical products.
Afternoon free – relax at your hotel, or take a walk in the wonderful
Tuscan landscape.
