MSSA International Convention 2010Kuala Lumpur has boomed inthe last 10 years but shouldnot just mimic others...A forum entitled “A meeting of minds” was led by Ir. Stephen Tam, MSSADeputy President. One thought was that potential in Malaysia is untappedprobably due to cultural issues and that MSSA can play a role in innovationand motivation. Also problems in the 21st century cannot be solved using20th century methodologies… we have to look outside the box. Kuala Lumpurhas boomed in the last 10 years but should not just mimic others. The nextgeneration expects to see KL different from other cities as steel promotes alonger life-span of buildings. Past and current efforts have been to convertconcrete users to steel whereas perhaps the effort should be to look for areaswhere steel is the natural solution. One problem that needs to be overcomeis that local architects are not well versed in steel design and need to learnfrom international experience. One participant suggested that Malaysiashould follow the example of Singapore which gives the title “ StS , StES” formembers who graduate from selected courses and categories for fabricators.More than 80% of the delegates reported that they were very happy andsatisfied with the quality of the convention, the speakers and the contentof their presentations. Feedback suggested that “the exposure we got wasfantastic, especially from the ‘free form’ architectural angle”.By all accounts the convention was a great success for the MSSA and 2012is eagerly awaited for another International Convention.w w w . m s s a . o r g . m yOCT - DEC20103
