1.6 Personnel A list of personnel of the centre is given at the end of the report. Within the core activities, two academic staff members and two new Ph.D. students were employed in 1999. In 2000 the new research professor (Søren Hvilsted) was appointed, one new staff scientist and four new PhD candidates were employed. In 2000 a management and personnel development programme was initiated. The reason was to strengthen the collaboration between staff members from the two institutions, to establish joint values and to use these values in the daily organisation of the centre. Support for this project was obtained from the so-called ‘Omstillingsfonden’ with the Ministry of Finance. The project will be concluded with an evaluation in the summer 2001, until now, it has been a successful process. 1.7 Organisation The organisation of the centre is shown below. 1.8 New facilities The design of the new laboratories at DTU was planned in 1999. This work created the basis for obtaining the official approval from the Ministry of Research to start up the building project for building 423, which was finished on schedule around new-year 2000. About 500 sqm. of excellent laboratories with adjoining office space were established on the two top floors of the building. The process laboratories in building 427 at DTU will be moved and expanded to give room for new activities. This work started late 1999, and the first process hall was finished early 2000. A clean room facility for microinjection moulding was finished in the summer of 2000. At RISØ the process of concentrating the activities in building 111 has started in 2000. Some activities have been moved to DTU. The first Small-angle x-ray scattering facility was established at Risø. The main part of the investments in large equipment was done in 1999 and 2000, but a significant fraction of the investments await new laboratories early 2001. 1.9 Economy In general, the economy of the centre follows the general budget as set within the grant conditions. The turnover of the centre fall within 4 more or less equal sized parts from the main grant (STVF), DTU, Risø, and externally financed projects, respectively. The economy of the main projects, funded by the science councils (STVF) are proceeding well. The investments are a little behind schedule (20%) awaiting the start-up in our new building at DTU. The delay will be caught up with early 2001, via planned investments. Also the salary expenses are slightly lower than the budget (10-15%), due to delayed start-up of PhD projects. This will be compensated by a somewhat higher activity by the end of the first 4-year period. The main partner institutions are co-funding the activities via staff salary, running costs, investments and building costs. In addition, the centre has obtained significant support from external sources, including other science council project, EU grants, ‘centre contracts’, industrial sponsorships, industry projects etc. 1.10 Summary and outlook During the fist 18 months of the existence of The Danish Polymer Centre a large number of projects have been started and the first results have been obtained. In 2000 the centre produced more than 75 international publications, a new plan for the polymer education have been presented to the involved departments, and a number of new industrial projects have been started. The new building for the activities at DTU was completed December 2000. The accounts are slightly below the budget. Page 7
