President’s ColumnGary Stark, Zora Buchanan and Ihad a wonderful foray on January 26,attending the official opening of thenewly renovated Toronto KiwanisBoys and Girls Club’s Miles and KellyNadal Youth Centre in theCabbagetown/North Regent Parkarea. We spoke with the Nadal family, and they are truly passionate aboutchildren’s welfare and education. The exquisitely designedand highly functioning facility is amazing and the childrenand staff were so proud to show it off. Corporate sponsorsfor some of the individual rooms include IKEA Canada, TDBank Financial Group, Rogers Communications, Lowe’sCanada and many others. John McAlpine and our own KeithLoffler were the architects for the project.A number of Club members have approached me, askingwhat we as a Club can be doing for the community aroundus, especially for young people. I feel this is a perfectopportunity for Club members who would like to donatesome of their time and experience. Zora Buchanan providesthe contact information on page 6 of the LAMPSletter. In the last LAMPSletter there was a call for nominations tothe Board. The terms are for two years and the Board isstructured so that half the members step down in June ofeach year and new Board members join. We look forrepresentation from all five LAMPS disciplines as well asspecialty skills in finance, fundraising, communications andinstitute management. Nominations and suggestions forcandidates should be forwarded to Margot Trevelyan, theChair of the Nominations Committee. Our Vice-President, Richard Moorhouse, has beenconvening quarterly meetings with the LAMPS and StandingCommittee Chairs. As a number of the Committee Chairsare ending their terms, Richard’s next meeting will addressthe transition plans of each committee so that there is smoothcontinuity come June.I am pleased to propose two President’s Expeditions, one forWednesday, February 29, and the other for Saturday, March10. The first will be a trip to Gallery Gevik in Yorkville to seea first-class show on the contribution of Canadian women tothe abstract art movement. The second is an outing to HartHouse Theatre at the University of Toronto, to catch theclosing night performance of Tennessee Williams’ The Nightof the Iguana. David Ferry, our John Coulter HonoraryMember for Stage, is starring in this production and he isdelighted that we are coming out to see him. Details are inthe LAMPSletter on page 8.It was my honour and privilege to present the Arts & LettersClub Award for 2012 to Neil Crory on February 9, 2012. Itwas a stellar evening, with a veritable who’s who in Canadianmusic in attendance to pay tribute to Neil. I only wish theGreat Hall had been twice the size, as we had to turn awaymany people. The messages of appreciation were an amazingtestament to Neil’s outstanding legacy to Canadian music inthe role of programmer and recording producerextraordinaire. The eight prominent guest speakers spokeeloquently of Neil’s achievements, but also mourned thepassing of the golden era of the CBC, no longer the wellfundedincubation lab for fostering Canadian talent that itwas. The evening was capped by a thrilling performance byinternationally renowned soprano Adrianne Pieczonka andpianist Stephen Ralls, of Richard Strauss’ “Zueignung,”followed by a heartfelt standing ovation for Neil. Thespectacular gala evening was a highlight of my presidency andI wish to express my deep appreciation to Ruth Morawetz, who nominated Neil for this award, John Lawson, the Chairof the Arts & Letters Club Award Selection Committee andhost for the evening, and John Miller, of the Stratford MusicFestival. All three worked countless hours pinning down thedetails of the exceptionally fine programme and ensuring itsflawless execution. Our thanks also go to the staff and inparticular to Chris, for overseeing the technical side of theevening.Excitement is building for our two coach trips to Stratford tosee 42nd Street (June 29) and Henry V (September 27).Marianne Heller and Zora Buchanan have provided all thedetails on pg. 8 in this issue of LAMPSletter. What agreat job Margaret did in writing that book for the Club. Ican recommend it to anyone, especially new members whomight like to learn more of the extraordinary history of theClub and its members. Many copies were initially sold and a good number have beenused as gifts to speakers at Club events. Now, five years later,we have only a handful of copies left! We are going to print asecond edition, this time in paperback format. We anticipatethat most of these copies will be used as speaker gifts.Unfortunately, the cost of printing an appropriate number ofcopies for speaker gifts will be several thousand dollars. Withthe Club’s very limited reserves, how could we finance the costof printing these needed books? I am delighted to advise theClub that our good member Johanna Sedlmayer-Katz has cometo the rescue! Some years ago she provided generous restrictedfunding to the Club for centenary-related projects, not all ofwhich was spent. She has now authorized the use of the balance ofher restricted fund to finance the reprint of The Great Adventure. What a generous lady we have in Johanna! On behalf of the Club,I thank her so very much for coming to the rescue, once again.Bill Buchanan, TreasurerMarch 2012 5
