along with the Mexican ministry of health have formed a collaborative project,whereby 1500 <strong>Katadyn</strong> <strong>Drip</strong> <strong>Filters</strong> have been distributed to families in the disadvantagedmountainous region of Oxchuc. At the same time, water tanks were installedin each house, with which rain water can becollected. The combination of rain water and the<strong>Drip</strong> <strong>Filters</strong> will allow the population to have easyaccess to clean water and will play an essential rolein preventing infectious diseases from <strong>being</strong> spread.The <strong>Drip</strong> Filter is comprised of two plastic tanks andthree cleanable ceramic filter candles. The pollutedwater is filled into the upper tank and runs only bymeans of gravity through the filter candles to then becollected into the closed lower tank. From there, thegerm-free water can be withdrawn from a small outlettap. Among the population, the product is well accepted, simply because the waterlooks so much better. One single <strong>Drip</strong> Filter has a capacity of up to 150,000 litres,depending on the water quality. <strong>Drip</strong> <strong>Filters</strong> have proved to be a simple and effectivetool to combat a large number of waterborne diseases in developing countries. Theyhave many advantages over other measures such as boiling water (too expensive becauseof a shortage of firewood) or treatment using chlorine (unsuitable for regularuse as a disinfectant).Early in 2008, Toni Brandi, <strong>Katadyn</strong>’s internationalsales manager, took a trip to <strong>Mexico</strong> to get a firsthandidea about what the situation in <strong>Chiapas</strong> islike.
