For example, the pattern 1-3-5-7 over a MajorSeventh Chord can be adapted to 1-3-5-b7 for a Dominant Seventh,1-b3-5-b7 for a Minor Seventh, and 1-b3-b5-b7 for a DiminishedSeventh Chord. This is an excellent way to learn the chord changes to new tunes.Pick one pattern and repeat it over the entire tune until you feelcomfortable, and then change the pattern. Remember, John Coltrane'simpressive solo on Giant Steps is almost entirely built off of scales, and the two patterns 1-2-3-5 and 1-3-5-7.
