John van Leeuwen, Chairman and
CEO: Mr. van Leeuwen joined
ECOSYNTHETIX INC. as Chief
Executive Officer in October 2004
and has served as Chairman since
the Company's inception in 1996. He
has previously held positions at Tech
Inspirations Inc., a venture capital
firm, Baan Company, a provider of
ERP software and Strohn CIM
Systems, a CIM software provider.
Additionally, Mr. van Leeuwen served
in the research, development and
marketing departments for Monsanto
Chemical Company and Shell
Chemicals from 1981 through 1987.
Mr. van Leeuwen earned a B.S. in
Chemistry with honors from the
University of Waterloo in 1981.

ECOSYNTHETIX INC. was founded in 1996 to develop high-tech biobased
materials with performance capabilities equal to or greater than those of the
standard petroleum-based products. Over the past 12 years ECOSYNTHETIX
has secured a significant Intellectual Property portfolio of patents and patent
applications for protection of its disruptive technologies. The Company's
biobased products have shown excellent commercial potential as substitutes for
the standard petroleum-based products.
Company Strategy
To date, ECOSYNTHETIX has focused on a large commercial application within
the global paper industry. As a result of its reliance on petrochemical-based
inputs, the paper manufacturing industry has significant exposure to fluctuations
and uncertainty in oil and gas prices. The Company believes it offers a longterm
replacement solution that creates value for manufacturers and provides an
eco-friendly replacement to current products. In addition to its existing target
markets, the Company has identified initial proof-of-concept for several other
applications where it can utilize its technologies. Given adequate resources, the
Company believes that there are numerous additional opportunities to exploit
new processes, industries and applications that currently use petroleum-based
synthetic latexes.
Intellectual Property
ECOSYNTHETIX has developed a significant Intellectual Property portfolio of
18 patents and patent applications for protection of its disruptive technologies.
Programs
ECOSPHERE® is a biopolymer derived from the fundamental re-engineering of
renewable resources ("new" carbon) into biopolymer nanoparticles.
ECOSPHERE® biolatex products have been designed to have a positive impact
on the environment. They provide novel binders with a neutral carbon footprint
for the paper manufacturer. Petroleum-based SB and SA Latex binders, in
contrast, contain only "old" carbon. For every 1 Million lbs of SB and SA Latex
substituted by ECOSPHERE® biolatex, this intrinsically offers a reduction of 3.3
million pounds (1515 metric tons) of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This
provides the equivalent of eliminating CO2 emissions of approximately 400 cars.
A 37.5% industry wide substitution level would reduce CO2 emissions by 2.27
Million metric tons equating to 600,000 cars off the road.
