5Senior <strong>School</strong>Stars in their eyesRuth Rees (pictured 3rd left) with (left to right) MadelineDooley, Louise Cowell, Anastasia Forbes, Jemima D’Souza(year 7) and Martin Moore, physics technicianKeen stargazers at <strong>The</strong> Queen’s <strong>School</strong> are now able to search theheavens more accurately after a generous former pupil presentedthe school’s astronomy club with a new telescope.Ruth Rees, a keen amateur astronomer, has donated a modern 8inch refracting telescope which is computer controlled. Given thedate and location, it can automatically scan the sky to find individualstars or constellations. Once they had seen the telescope in actionin the laboratory, members of the astronomy club began planningtheir first ever star party.Pooling theirtalentsMembers of the senior swimming teamhave been lapping up success. Picturedleft to right with Chris Moore, head ofPE, Nicola Canfield, Alice Little,Hannah Phillips (year 13) and HollyMcCann (year 12) competed in <strong>The</strong>National <strong>School</strong>s Relay Finals held inCoventry and are consequently rankedamongst the top teams nationally in bothfreestyle and medley relay events.Meanwhile, swimmers from years 7, 8and 9 have been making a splash morelocally by achieving the silver standard ineach age group at the Chester andDistrict Swimming Gala.Festival finesseJudges at <strong>The</strong> Queen’s <strong>School</strong> Festival of Music, which attractedover 120 girls competing in 18 different classes, declared that thestandard was higher than ever this year. Sophie Rowland (year 13)was presented with the Amy Underhill trophy as overall winnerfollowing her stunning renditions of Mozart’s “Alleluia” andSondheim’s “A Glamorous Life”. <strong>The</strong> runner up was Áine Jackson(year 11), who showed considerable skill and flair with herperformance of Arban’s “<strong>The</strong> Carnival of Venice” for baritone horn.All our yesterdaysEveryone who is interested in the historyof Queen’s will be fascinated to read thescanned copies of Have Mynde which arenow available on our website.<strong>The</strong> school is particularly grateful to theformer students who have generouslygiven us the financial support to carryout the digitisation of this fascinatingresource.
