National Reproductive <strong>Health</strong> Strategy (2012–2016)Advocate with implementing partners and the Emergency Preparedness andResponse Office for the development and distribution <strong>of</strong> RH emergency kits.Increase <strong>health</strong> providers’ capacity for preparedness and response activities in RHservices in emergencies.Make sure the minimum RH services can be reached by affected RH target groups inemergencies.6.2: Gender IssuesThe Gender Department plays a key role in addressing gender equality and equity in the<strong>national</strong> <strong>health</strong> policies and guidelines. The main aim <strong>of</strong> this unit is to focus specifically onpriority areas <strong>of</strong> RH, especially mothers and newborns, and women’s and children’s rights.Success in achieving these goals will be evaluated, as well as how adequately they havecontributed to overall RH rights and to the attainment <strong>of</strong> MDGs.The RHD’s strategic approaches to supporting the Gender Department include the following:6.2.1. Support an increase in awareness <strong>of</strong> gender issues and <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> rights among<strong>health</strong> workers Officially endorse and support the integration <strong>of</strong> the gender training programdeveloped by the MoPH into existing RH training programs.Support the strengthening <strong>of</strong> the <strong>health</strong> services delivery system in relation togender issues.Officially endorse the development <strong>of</strong> a referral system for cases <strong>of</strong> gender-basedviolence in collaboration with the legal enforcement and justice system.Officially endorse the improved data collection in disaggregating data by sex,gender-based violence, and early marriage.6.2.2. Enhance women’s decision-making role in relation to <strong>health</strong>-seeking practices Advocate for the continued recruitment and deployment <strong>of</strong> female CHWs, whosepresence permits increased access to <strong>health</strong> services by rural women.6.3: NutritionAdvocate for the empowerment <strong>of</strong> women in decision-making regarding their RHneeds.Advocate for inclusion <strong>of</strong> RH topics in school curricula in coordination with <strong>Ministry</strong><strong>of</strong> Education.Advocate for the provision <strong>of</strong> maternity leave and child care for women in theworkforce.Support the code against sexual harassment in all public and private organizationsproviding <strong>health</strong> services.Prevention and treatment <strong>of</strong> malnutrition, support <strong>of</strong> <strong>health</strong>y nutritional practices andmicronutrient supplementation are the primary responsibility <strong>of</strong> the Nutrition Department,which has developed a detailed <strong>strategy</strong> covering many aspects <strong>of</strong> RH. The RHD will supportthe Nutrition Department in the following ways:6.3.1. Support and promote breastfeedingPage 25
