A spectacular, heavily-pleated green leaf,resembling a Japanese hand fan, (or Elizabethan collar)opens horizontally atop a 6" stem. Held just above thefoliage is a scrumptious pink lady slipper-like flower. The liphas an overall pink color, suffused with purple-red striationsand blotches. The sepals and petals are light apple greenwith a few purple speckles at their bases. This is a farranging species found over a large area in central China,Japan, and Korea, however it is becoming increasingly rarefrom collecting pressure. It is particularly difficult to growfrom seed and no one has found a reliable way ofpropagating them other than by division. Perhaps one daysomeone will find a way, but for now this queen of ladyslipper orchids will remain rare, illusive, and highly soughtafter.Zones: 2-9. Moist, humusrich, well-drained soil. Needspart shade to shade. It’s atemperate species, but canendure hot summerconditions and thrive.
