Heat Stabilization of Nylon 66Nylon 66 resins are susceptible tooxidative and thermal degradationwhen used in applications requiringcontinuous or extended exposure to hightemperatures. Since this exposure willcause a reduction in physicalproperties, specially formulated heatstabilized resins have been developed toprovide additional thermal endurance. The improved retention of physical andelectrical properties has enabled theuse of VYDYNE ® heat-stabilized resinsin applications that involve exposure totemperatures above 185°F/85°C.Figure 1 – Heat-Stabilized Half Life 1 Versus Temperature of Heat-StabilizedVYDYNE Nylon Resins (Nylon 66)100,00040,00010,000Thermal endurance curves comparingphysical properties of VYDYNE heatstabilizedNylon 66 and general purposeNylon 66 are illustrated in Figure 1.Thermal endurance testing measuresthe ability of a material to withstandlong exposures to elevated temperatures. The half life versus temperature curveson Figure 1 may be used to estimatethe maximum continuous service temperatureof a part made from VYDYNEheat-stabilized Nylon 66, given arequired service life.Companies often develop internal specificationsfor physical property retentionof heat-stabilized Nylon 66 resins. Theserequirements and the test methods usedto define them vary from company tocompany. Certain VYDYNE resins havebeen tested under specific customerspecifications. Results are shown inTable 1 and Table 2.Half Life (Hours)1,000100Be aware that as with any heat-stabilizednylon, certain pigments can interactwith the heat stabilizer additive systemcausing adverse affects on the resultingcolor and a loss in heat stabilization.10464(240)392(200)320(160)°F (°C)248(120)176(80)Dielectric Strength, Heat-Stabilized Nylon 66Dielectric Strength, General Purpose Nylon 66Tensile Strength and Tensile Impact, Heat-Stabilized Nylon 66Tensile Strength, General Purpose Nylon 66Tensile Impact, General Purpose Nylon 661Time after which half the original property has been lost at 1/16 in (1.6 mm) thickness.
