Herm served as Athletic Director and head boys basketball coach of Cathedral High School until Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School opened in 1956. He served as Kapaun’s head basketball coach until 1961 and as its AD until 1967, achieving great success on the court and as the leader of the entire athletic program. His dedication to working in Catholic education continued at Sacred Heart College (now Newman University), where he launched and nurtured the College’s fledgling athletic program as Athletic Director while also serving as its head basketball coach. Ultimately, he embarked upon a very successful business career as a Pizza Hut franchisee. Throughout all of his endeavors, Jackie remained his supportive, active partner as well as a dedicated, loving mother and grandmother to their children and grandchildren. I am confident that Herm’s gift will serve as a springboard for other prospective donors to make a financial commitment in support of the new athletic complex. With the help of the KMC Major Gifts Council, we will be working hard in the coming months to contact the prospects who have been identified. Mike Burrus, President office of development Annual Fund This past summer was spent wrapping up the 2006-07 Annual Fund while making preparations for the upcoming year. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their help last year to make the Annual Fund a success. A full summary of the Annual Fund appears on Page 5 of this edition of Quest. You will be receiving your 2007-08 Annual Fund packets in the mail shortly. Again this year please give prayerful consideration toward making a gift to the Annual Fund in support of the school and its mission. Your gift will be used to defray the operating expenses of the school for this upcoming school year. On-line giving is available again this year through the KMC website at www.kapaun.org. Go to the Development/Alumni tab and click on Annual Fund to proceed to the on-line site. Installment payments are available for your gift as well should you elect to spread your gift out over time. If you have any questions about on-line giving or need any assistance, please contact me at 316-636-9612. 2 ATTENTION ALUMNI If you have not received a KMC Flash Update yet this school year, then we probably don’t have your email address on file. Get added to the list by sending an email to karkin@kapaun.org with the Subject: “Capture Me”. Please list your name and class year. You will then be in the loop! Our faculty and staff launched their Annual Fund in August, and the student body completed their launch during September. The other constituent groups will complete their launch during October. I want to thank the members of the Annual Fund Council for their help in getting this year off to a great start. If you have photos of your reunion that are not yet posted on the website please email them to karkin@kapaun.org, or send them on a CD to me at the school. We would love to share them with everyone! If your class year ends in “3” or “8”, next year is a reunion year for your class. Reunion planning is already underway for a number of reunions for next summer. For the first time, the new commons will be available for use by all reunions for their big party. Spirit Store The on-line Spirit Store is up and running. Thousands of KMC spirit items are available on-line. Show your Crusader spirit from wherever you are! The site is accessible under the Development/Alumni tab. Commons Dedication Mark your calendars for November 18, 2007. Bishop Michael O. Jackels will be on hand to formally dedicate the new commons and related facilities, including the new statue of St. Augustine. Following the dedication ceremonies, we will host an Open House, including refreshments and guided campus tours. More information on the event is available in this edition of Quest, and on the KMC website under Development/Alumni/Phase 2 Commons. The link also includes a pictorial recap of the entire construction project, beginning in July 2006 and ending with the commons in use today. The BIG Event Time to mark your calendars again—for The BIG Event 2008. This year’s BIG Event will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008 in its new home—the new commons. Details are still pending, but a Las Vegas theme is in the planning stages. As always, you can plan on plenty of good food, drink and music as we again spend an evening celebrating Mount Carmel Academy, Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School and Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. KAPAUN MT. CARMEL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Dedication Ceremony Sunday, November 18, 2007 Please join Bishop Michael O. Jackels and the Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School community in a ceremony to dedicate KMC’s new facilities. An Open House, including guided campus tours and refreshments, will immediately follow. We celebrate our legacy of Catholic education that began with Mount Carmel Academy and Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School, and continues today as Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. We are proud to dedicate our new facilities, including the new commons, the Sr. Eustasia Meyers Faculty Center, the new art room expansion and the St. Augustine statue. 3 Alumni Gatherings Once again this spring we will be hitting the road for our annual Alumni Gatherings. This spring we plan to visit the following cities: Manhattan Lawrence Kansas City Denver Oklahoma City Dallas Houston All alums from all three schools are welcome and encouraged to join us for an evening of food and fun.
