'7. 2005•AlthoughSudan is an endemic area for malaria but viral infection wasfound to be the likely cause of fever in two-thirds of cases of childrenpresented with fever and negative blood film for malaria. Moreover,one third of hospitalizedcases of respiratory tract infections and 15% ofpatients with gastroenteritishad significantly high viral titers.Investigating febrile children for viral infections usingsimple heal-prick blood sample on filter paper is cost-effective.
