Continued...The Pink & White Terraces were the mostfamous tourist attraction in New Zealand andconsidered to be the eighth wonder of theworld. Those that made the long and hardjourney by way of horse and cart to visit theTerraces were most frequently well to dooverseas tourists or officers from the Britishforces in New Zealand. The silica Terraces formed natural bathingpools where the visiting tourists and Māorilocals would bathe au natural in male/femalesegregated areas. The Terraces were formed by geothermallyheated water containing large amounts ofsilicic acid and sodium chloride from two largegeysers. These geysers were part of a group of40 geysers in the nearby area. The Pink Terraces and the White Terraces were800 metres apart descending 40 metres to thelake edge of Rotomahana. They were completely destroyed by theeruption of Mount Tarawera, being replaced bythe Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley. After the eruption, a crater over 100 metresdeep encompassed the former site of theTerraces. After some years this filled with waterto form a new Lake Rotomahana, 30 metreshigher and much larger than the old lake, thus today the Terraces are now under waterand earth. Underwater sonar mapping ofthe lake floor in 2011 undertaken by WaikatoUniversity revealed images of parts of thePink Terraces.18 Guysers GazetteIssue 3 • Autumn 2015
