LIVE ITTO BELIEVE IT!Aqueduct of Padre TemblequeThe Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque,the most important hydraulicwork from the Viceregal period, with443 years of age, has be<strong>en</strong> inscribedin the list of UNESCO’s World Heritageand has become the 33rdMexican site declared; and with it,our country keeps its first position inthe contin<strong>en</strong>t with 27 cultural sites, 5natural sites and 1 mixed site.The World Heritage Committee,during its 39th session celebrated inthe German city of Bonn, approvedthe nomination with the name “Aqueductof Padre Tembleque HydraulicSystem” and was inscribedunder the criteria i, ii and iv. It is themost important hydraulic complexthat was built during the Viceregalperiod in the American Contin<strong>en</strong>t,and has <strong>en</strong>tered to this important listas an exempted heritage channel,which means that it isn’t part of amonum<strong>en</strong>ts zone.This massive hydraulic <strong>en</strong>gineeringwork from the 16th c<strong>en</strong>tury wasstarted in 1554 —it took 17 years tobe made— and was finished in 1571,by 40 native communities that provided400 quarry workers, helpers,builders, laborers, carp<strong>en</strong>ters andthe funding of wom<strong>en</strong> from thecommunities who produced textilesto finance the works withoutthe support of the Spanish Crown;while having the authorization fromViceroy Antonio de M<strong>en</strong>doza. Thebuilders were supervised by PadreTembleque, a Spanish FranciscanFriar, with the assistance of Juan deAgüeros.The Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque,being an example of constructivecreativity in the mixture betwe<strong>en</strong> theEuropean and Mesoamerican civilizations,was able to carry water tothe small communities in the Mexicanhigh plains, located betwe<strong>en</strong>the pres<strong>en</strong>t states of Hidalgo andMexico.http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/articulo/cultura/patrimonio/2015/07/6/unesco-acueducto-del-padre-tembleque
