DRIVING WITH POLYURETHANESJOINT INDUSTRY INITIATIVESTo improve the options for recovering most ofthe plastics from ELVs, the plastics and automotiveindustries are working together at European, nationaland international levels and in collaboration with otherpartners to develop a range of complementary recoveryoptions. At a European level, the following are activelyinvolved in improving the recovery and recyclingof ELVs.Through ISOPARecycling Resource GroupThe seven ISOPA member companies, together withrepresentatives of major PU trade associations, meetregularly to discuss proactively waste management andrecycling issues and to seek the open dialogue withlegislators, other industry associations, and downstreamorganisations. The aim is to speak with one voice andto develop solutions on an industry basis in the areaof recovery and recycling of polyurethanes.In conjunction with ISOPA, the EUROMOULDERSAssociation is effectively conducting co-research in orderto develop sound industrial solutions to the problems thatwill arise from the compliance with the ELV directive.Both EUROMOULDERS and ISOPA are convinced that,after a long lasting utilisation (i.e. 8 to 12 years in a car),polyurethanes can be partially recycled into newapplications, if economically justified. Otherwise theyshould be considered as special combustibles in cementkilns or modern incinerators to recover the energy.Through APME(Association of Plastics Manufacturers in Europe)Automotive Task ForceISOPA is an active player in the Automotive Task Forceof APME. This cross industry initiative has been set upto support research and development, looking at thescientific, technical, environmental and economic aspectsof End-of-life vehicles.The European Thematic NetworkISOPA is closely involved in the ‘European ThematicNetwork’ (ETN), a project group which has recentlybeen set up to assist the effective and full-scale ecoefficienttreatment of plastics in ELVs in the EuropeanUnion. The ETN is supported financially by DG XII ofthe European Commission.The objectives are to improve co-operation among theinvolved industries and create conditions of synergyacross Europe. The project includes over 40 partnersand is expected to last over 24 months. Next to leadingcar manufacturers and their plastics suppliers, the networkalso includes dismantling and shredding industries,material recovery industries, end-users of recoveredmaterials and energy, and the academic and researchcommunity.10
DRIVING WITH POLYURETHANESISOPAISOPA - the European Association of IsocyanateProducers - is the European trade association for theproducers of diisocyanates, one of the materials used inthe production of polyurethanes.Chemical Company. It has taken the lead inrepresenting the polyurethanes industry on importantissues, in co-operation with other industry bodies asEUROPUR, EUROMOULDERS and BING.ISOPA was founded in 1987 by seven chemicalcompanies that have European interests in theproduction of raw materials for polyurethanes: BASF,Bayer, Dow Europe, EniChem, ICI Polyurethanes,Lyondell Chemical Europe and Shell InternationalFollowing the principles of Responsible Care, ISOPAconcentrates on health, safety and environmental issues.ISOPA has developed guidelines emphasising theresponsible management of diisocyanates throughouttheir entire life-cycle.EUROMOULDERS ASSOCIATIONTen manufacturers of moulded polyurethane parts forthe automotive industry and a number of associatedmembers are representing a major part of the supplychain to this important European Industry. They meetregularly to find solutions to common problemsrelated to recycling and environmental issues, throughco-operation, consultation and research projects.The EUROMOULDERS Association is composed of thefollowing member companies: Recticel (B), BertrandFaure, Dunlopillo, Treves (F), Fehrer, Johnson Control,Woodbridge (D), Toscana Gomma, Clerprem (I), GrupoCopo (E) and a number of associated members,i.e. raw material suppliers and machinery manufacturers.11
