Petro-Canada’s success as an energy company depends onthe support of people in many communities. We are determinedto earn that support by playing an active andmeaningful role in community life.Throughout 2008, we continued to support our focus areasof education, environment, local community support andthe Olympics. The following initiatives provide just a fewexamples of this support.At the start of 2008, funding from our Emerging LeadersAward Program, which supports post-secondary students inthe areas of business, engineering, the earth sciences, andtrades and technology, had been extended to five Canadianinstitutions. During the year, we also invested $1.5 millioninto Women Building Futures, an Edmonton-based programthat includes a training centre, scholarships and housing toencourage women into the trades workforce.Environmental programs were also top of mind, reflectedin our Water Partnerships (see page 14), as was continuingour support for local community initiatives.Petro-Canada partnered with the Calgary Homeless Foundationto undertake Project Homeless Connect (PHC), aone-day event to be held four times in 2009, where homelessor low income individuals and families can access servicesfrom more than 50 agencies, obtain medical treatment andlearn more about employment and education opportunities.Many Petro-Canada employees have participated in the firsttwo of these events by collecting donation items and volunteeringtheir time.In 2008, employees were also involved in a very successfulUnited Way campaign. Combined corporate, employee,retiree and special event contributions totalled almost$3.5 million.Petro-Canada is also proud to be a major partner to theVancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.In 2008, Petro-Canada supported the Canadian Olympicand Paralympic teams in Beijing, China at the SummerOlympics. We also announced the Petro-Canada AthleteFamily Program for the Vancouver 2010 Games. This programgives family members the opportunity to watch theirloved ones compete at the Games.Now, with the 2010 Winter Games fast approaching, workis ramping up to ensure we are ready to meet our fuelcommitments for more than 1,100 buses and 4,500 carsand light trucks. In addition to fuelling the games, wecommissioned Aboriginal artist Klatle-Bhi to create a25-foot traditional totem pole. This project was completedin May 2009 and the pole will be on display during theOlympics before being displayed in Calgary as an ongoinglegacy. In April 2009, we announced the latest recipients ofthe Fuelling Athletes and Coaching Excellence (FACE)grants. Fifty of Canada’s highest potential developingathletes, along with their coaches, were each awarded$4,000 to help them achieve carded status and a place onour national teams.In addition to community partnerships, Petro-Canadaremains committed to maintaining respectful dialogue withstakeholders. In 2008, we delivered training based on theCompany’s Stakeholder and <strong>Community</strong> Engagement Principlesto more than 130 stakeholder practitioners across allour business units. In 2009, we aim to continue broadeningstakeholder capability across operational roles and withcontractors, while integrating stakeholder engagementpractices into North Africa/Near East development andexploration projects.To keep our ideas and actions in step with the world authoritieson corporate responsibility issues, we belong toa number of key organizations, such as the World BusinessCouncil for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and theCanadian Business for Social Responsibility, among others.In 2008, we piloted a WBCSD framework to guide investmentproposals for the Libya sustainable development program.Whether at the grassroots level of some of our partnershipsor the larger scale of our international initiatives,Petro-Canada has the strength to deliver positive and lastingcontributions to communities.More information on our community initiatives isavailable on our website under:• Engaging our Stakeholders• Commitment to Aboriginal Peoples• <strong>Community</strong> Partnerships• Local <strong>Community</strong> Support• Employee Volunteerism• Regional Priorities and Case StudiesPETRO-CANADA 11
