Foundation StudiesThe large art studio in the heritage-protectedriding arenaPrinciplesThe course of studies at the Ruhrakademiewas intended from the get-go topresent an alternative to the education inArt and Design at state-universities. Thegoal was to positively create a studyatmosphere which differed from theanonymity of state universities. Furthermore, the education on offer should bemore practice-oriented and targeted tospecific goals. Over the course of time itbecame evident that teaching moderndesign within the context of its purposewas simply not enough. Rather it appearednecessary to promote creativepotential in a targeted way instead, toallow innovative ideas to develop. Thisapplies to the entire range of applied andfine design.Since then, the development of perceptionand training of conceptual thinkingthrough the setting of experimental taskshave become some of the most importantbuilding blocks in the programmeof studies. However, drawing as amedium of communication is also ofcomparably great importance. It isn’t fornothing that the word “design” comesfrom the Italian disegno = drawing.Drawing is the fundamental discipline ofa designer, the tool which helps him todevelop and flesh out his ideas. At thesame time, drawing practice sharpensthe eye for fine differences and aestheticqualities.Nonetheless, the Ruhrakademie availsitself of the most modern computertechnology, in order to meet thedemands which are made of graduates intheir later professional lives. In recentyears, subjects such as Multimedia,Computer Animation or Film and VideoDesign have supplemented and extendedthe range of courses on offer. However,we firmly believe that the fusion of creativeability and open-mindedness is abasic requirement for good design andgives the term “multimedia” - whichmany swear by - a concrete meaning thathas a practical application. This is not a cigarette hole... perception istaught by detailed and accurate depictionof everyday motifs.Innovative design is only there toexpect, where various design disciplinesinfluence each other, thus deepeninga student’s sense for aestheticquality in general. Fundamentaltraining in perception and representationis waiting for each Ruhrakademiestudent from the very beginning oftheir studies, whether they are hopingto graduate in Computer Animation,Communication Design, PhotoDesign, Illustration, Fine Arts orFilmmaking.Drawing to a photographic levelof accuracy is part of the firstsemester teaching material. This is intended to increasesensitivity of perception.
