PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEЗвернення президента2 |Just over 49 years ago a group of visionaryUkrainian Canadians initiated a neworganization to address a growing need inthe Ukrainian Canadian community. Thesevisionaries knew that the expansion of thecommunity through multiple generationsin Canada would result in a large number ofcultural activities in Canada and beyond andas a result the Shevchenko Foundation wasformed. The first imperative in the early dayswas to create a self-sustaining organizationdedicated to maintaining the UkrainianCanadian cultural identity and sense ofcultural purpose in a dynamic Canada whichhad become the chosen homeland for manyUkrainians and their succeeding generations.Over the past 49 years the Foundation hasparticipated in hundreds of projects andcountless successes which represent a trulywide and deep cultural heritage in ourcommunity. Over its lifetime the ShevchenkoFoundation has provided over 9 milliondollars of support to the UkrainianCanadian community.Having travelled to Ukraine on more than oneoccasion in the past year I have been contactedby many Ukrainians in the Diaspora askingfor tips or help on how to establish similarfoundations beyond Ukraine. In this regardthe Shevchenko Foundation is a leader forthe entire Diaspora and the credit for thisleadership rests foremost with the donorswho place their trust in a vibrant Board ofDirectors, a committed voluntary InvestmentCommittee headed up by Mr. Wally Shoemayand of course our wonderful staff at ourWinnipeg office headed by our ExecutiveDirector, Ms. Lesia Szwaluk. The needs of the Ukrainian Canadiancommunity have evolved and so has thestrategy of the Shevchenko Foundation inmeeting those needs. The ShevchenkoFoundation has initiated a strategy forproviding grants to qualify grantees infour key areas:Our Arts Program recognizes the value of thearts as a fundamental aspect of expressingunique cultural identity by promoting thecreation, advancement and disseminationof Ukrainian Canadian artistic endeavourthroughout Canada. This is reflected bygrants in the areas of the literary arts, music, theatre, visual arts, dance and media arts. The second pillar of our granting strategyis the Educational Program. Through thisprogram the Foundation seeks to increaseand disseminate knowledge of all aspectsof Ukrainian life in Canada throughtraditional and non-traditional educationalprogramming and by assisting resource andcurriculum development in both public andcommunity-based schools. We also supportcreative initiatives in educational programs, professional development for educators, the teaching of Ukrainian language andUkrainian Canadian subjects at the postsecondarylevel, and the publication ofscholarly works on Ukrainian and UkrainianCanadian topics. In addition, the EducationProgram provides for a wide-ranging bursaryprogram for students pursuing graduatestudies in Canada at the MA or PhD levelin a recognized Ukrainian or UkrainianCanadian discipline as well as meeting theneed for bursaries for undergraduate studentsstudying in a language program in Ukrainethrough an accredited Canadian university. The Foundation has also pioneered theCommunity Development Program. We arecommitted to the sustainability of a vibrantand flourishing Ukrainian community inCanada through the fostering of a sense ofcommon identity and fellowship, participationin community life and the strengthening ofcommunity organizations. This includessupporting programs operated by the UkrainianCanadian Congress, national communitydevelopment projects of Ukrainian Canadianorganizations and local community initiativesvia local festivals, community concerts andactivities of local organizations. Finally, the Foundation wishes to strengthenour Ukrainian Canadian identity throughour Heritage Program which will ensure thatthe history of the Ukrainian community inCanada is preserved and that the importantsources of Ukrainian Canadian history arenot lost to future generations. This involvesgrants for research, writing and publicationsof the histories of local communities, support for published works on the historyof Ukrainians in Canada for both scholarlyand mass audiences, the development ofexhibitions and events for the display ofarchival sources and artifacts, the acquisitionsby recognized and established institutionsof heritage items or collections at risk andultimately providing support to existing andestablished institutions of archival repositories, museums, libraries, art galleries and researchprograms. To be the President of a prestigiousorganization that has these important coreobjectives is truly humbling. Our goals areonly matched by the incredible output anddemand by Ukrainian Canadians in all ofthese areas where our four programs arededicated. All of this effort takes volunteertime and money. Thankfully, our UkrainianCanadian community is very generous inthe work of its volunteers and the financialgenerosity of our individuals is certainly wellknown. Unfortunately, to meet the needs andexpectations of our community, I must saythat we do not have sufficient resources tofully actualize all of the programs in amanner that would bring the greatestamount of return to our community.Ongoing fundraising events and activities arecritical to the continuation and sustainabilityof the Shevchenko Foundation and withoutthis ongoing effort many of the abovedescribed programs would simply ceaseto exist or would not be funded at all.Over the course of 49 years the hopes of theShevchenko Foundation have remained aliveand vibrant. It is an honour to have beenchosen lead volunteer and President of theFoundation to carry forward these hopes anddreams. With the continued support of ourUkrainian Canadian community we willendure in preparing a firm foundation forour organization as it anticipates thecommencement of its next half centuryof activity.God bless all of you and your families andonce again a sincere thank you for yourcontinuing support.

The building that has housed these newspapers for decades does notprovide a good storage environment for them. I am overwhelmed by mycommunity and culture for its support, forthe network of friends and professionals I havemade in it, and for the opportunity to carry onvolunteering and creating a future for theUkrainians in Canada. I believe that Ukrainianpeople have much to contribute to the world. There are many relevant issues in Ukraine’scontemporary affairs, and the history in Ukrainehas often been motive for major events in Europeand the rest of the world.I hope to be a member of the Ukrainiancommunity who can add to this relevance andcontinue sharing Ukrainian contributions asa vital part of the varied fabric Canada hasbecome and has been built on. The ShevchenkoFoundation support encourages and sustainsthat contribution, and I thank you sincerely.Thank you again,Cory ChetyrbokLast summer I spent seven and a half weeksin Ternopil, Ukraine. Taking part in thespring session in Ukraine changed my life.I met so many beautiful people whoinspired me to become a better person. My professor, Olena Huzar, at the TernopilVolodymyr Hnatiuk National PedagogicalUniversity was incredible. After our tutorsession we spent the afternoon doingcultural activities. We danced, madepysanky, painted, went to concerts, andexplored the beautiful city of Ternopil. There were three excursions built intothe program. We went to the CarpathianMountains, Khotyn and Kamanets, andLviv. Being immersed in the Ukrainianculture has definitely helped me pick upthe language quite quickly. This trip exceeded all my goals andexpectations. I went into the program notreally knowing what to expect and I leftwith a grasp on the Ukrainian language, some beautiful friends from Ukraine, and some wonderful memories that I willcherish forever.I am so grateful that I had the opportunityto go to Ukraine and I will continue tokeep in touch with the people I met there.I would honestly go back in a heartbeatand I sincerely hope I can participate inthe program next year. As I settle back inat home I continue to speak Ukrainian withmy family. I go to a bilingual church everySunday. I look forward to going back toUkrainian dancing with PavlychenkoFolklorique Ensemble. Most of all, I amexcited to share the Ukrainian culturewith my friends and family and somedaymy students.Sincerely,Kalyn HarasymchukIn May 2011, I was fortunate to travel toUkraine and study at the Kyiv-MohylaInstitute. Every morning we attended classesstudying Ukrainian culture, language, andmythology. Our afternoons were filled withwonderful excursions to historical sites suchSt. Sophia Cathedral, the Golden Gates, andAndriivskyj descent, to name a few. Each dayand night allowed us to experience livingin Ukraine, which initially was quite an eyeopening experience. On weekends, I was ableto travel to other parts of Ukraine, Lviv andKrym. Besides the opportunity to enhancemy Ukrainian language skills, the mostmemorable part of this trip was the emotionalconnection I made with my cultural roots.Sharing this experience with other Canadianyouth and building relations with youthfrom Ukraine added to the emotion of theexperience. Followingup on its 2010 launch of professionallyrecorded CD packages of 221 art songs ofMykola Lysenko, Yakiv Stepovyi and KyryloStetsenko, the UASP embarked upon thedocumentation of the 205 art songs ofUkraine’s Galician composers. During thesummer of 2011, international opera starPavlo Hunka, founder of the UASP, joinedwith producer Roman Hurko and a cast ofCanadian opera stars and pianists at GlennGould Studio in Toronto to record 80 ofthe Galician treasures by Denys Sichynsky,Vasyl Barvinsky, Stanyslav Liudkevych andStefania Turkewich. The works of Turkewich,Ukraine’s first female composer, werelargely unknown until now, and theyastounded the Canadian musicianswith their imaginative, innovative andbeautifully melodic ideas. The UASPSibelius team—a group of students ofcomposition attending at the RoyalAcademy of Music, the Royal Collegeof Music and the Guildhall of Music inLondon set about transcribing Turkewich’ssongs into the Sibelius computer musicprogramme which transposes them into anykey in which an artist wishes to sing. Theprogramme also prepares each song to bepublished on the UASP web site(www.uasp.ca), where a library ofUkrainian art songs is in the making,to be accessed for study and performance, free of charge, by musicians and musiclovers throughout the world. And inrecognition of the importance of theUkrainian art song, Pavlo Hunka wasinvited to perform Lysenko’s song cycle,A Poet’s Love, at the Passau Classical MusicFestival on July 11, 2012 in Germany, wherethe art song was born. The groupperforms regularly at many communityfunctions throughout the year, includingVesna Festival, Ukrainian Day in the Parkand Folk Fest, just to mention a few.Last year, thanks in large measure tosupport from the Taras ShevchenkoFoundation, Spivohari recorded a CD ofthirteen Ukrainian folk and ‘obriadovi’songs, as well as a few ‘rizdvizni koliadky’.The project was a wonderful opportunityfor our young singers to develop a productthat both showcases their heritage andtalents and enables these to be sharedin the broader community. We hope this CD will serve to inspire notonly other young singers and also allmembers of our community.Respectfully,Zhyto would like to formally thankthe Shevchenko Foundation for theirfinancial support of our upcoming album.Preservation of the Ukrainian Canadianculture, specifically music, is importantto the members of Zhyto and it is becauseof generous support that we are able togo ahead with such projects. dramas/musicalsPleiades TheatreToronto, Luba, Simply Luba$7,000Some goals are accomplished quickly; otherstake longer. Telling the personal story ofLuba Goy’s life took more than 25 years andstarted in a casual conversation at Expo 86in Vancouver. It was during a break in a rather strenuousperformance schedule for my production,Just A Kommedia, that Luba and I werechatting about the very theme of that play—growing up as Ukrainian Canadians. Asshe was describing the rather uniquecircumstances of her life, it struck me thathere were the makings of a fascinatingbiography that should be told as a drama. And so began our commitment to each otherthat someday—as long as it would take—we would together fashion into a one-womanshow the fascinating account of her life as animmigrant arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax withher Ukrainian parents, and then her careeras a Canadian comedienne known fromcoast to coast. This, we determined early, would not exclusively be a comedy, but rathera blending of the actual incidents—touching as often as amusing—from Luba’slife, told in a non-chronological style tokeep its audiences watching attentively as anoutstanding actress exercised her craft.Over the years, whenever we would see eachother at a party, or talk as friends on thetelephone, there was always a reaffirmationof our goal. But as long as Luba’s televisionand stage work with Royal Canadian AirFarce and her personal appearances here andthere were uppermost in her commitments, our goal simply had to wait. Only whenAir Farce announced its retirement fromCBC-TV did the door open, giving us bothan opportunity to begin serious planningfor what would eventually becomeLuba, Simply Luba.Finding the funding for a full productionwas another part of the process, and that’swhere I especially welcomed the supportof organizations like the ShevchenkoFoundation and of individuals who, likeme, had grown up in the traditions of theUkrainian home and culture. Here, too, it took time, but eventually thedollars mounted, and a colleague Torontotheatre company, Pleiades Theatre, whereI also serve as Producer, joined Red Bootsto give us the structure and the team tomount our play. For our promotional materials, NatalkaHusar, created what one might describeas an exclusive, distinctive and matchless“vinok” that only Ms. Goy herself couldwear. Incorporating the musicalaccompaniment to complement theshow’s drama was the task of ourmaster bandurist, Victor Mishalow, whomI decided to set behind an on-stage screen.Recruiting the internationally celebrateddesigner, Doug Paraschuk, anotherWinnipegger of Ukrainian heritage, meantthat I had a colleague who understoodhow to translate every nuance of the storyinto appropriate visual settings for ouraudiences. And so, we reached our goal and our first, live audience on May 7 at the BerkeleyStreet Theatre in downtown Toronto. The publicity promised a look into thehilarious heart, passionate soul andpoignant story of Canada’s belovedcomedienne; the marketing naturallyincluded the city’s Ukrainian-Canadianpopulation, and they didn’t let us down!Looking back, I feel rather proud of whatwe all accomplished. It seems to me thatUkrainian Canadian creativity hasblossomed rather beautifully in the visual, musical, dance and literary arts but in thefield I particularly hold dear, theatre, contributions are not especially strong. Here’s hoping our telling this story of onewoman’s life contributes to this scarcity, particularly because Luba’s personaljourney can touch the hearts of millions ofother Canadians who are not of Ukrainianroots but who can still identify with animmigrant child clinging to simple wishesupon landing on this new shore: peace, notwar; safety, not terror. Now, the challenge before us is takingthis show on the road. Stand by, Canada, because Luba, Simply Luba may just becoming to a theatre near you, and soonerthan 25 years.Andrey Tarasiukproducer, pleiades theatre22 || 23

He reflected on the emotional evening and how,on the 150th anniversary of his death, we remain inspired byTaras Shevchenko. First donors to the Foundation did not knowthat in 50 years there would still be young children inspired to lifttheir eyes to the Lord as Shevchenko himself did as a boy. Yet, theFoundation founders somehow knew with all of their hearts thatwith the basis of financial support, someone would indeed be hereenabling our future.Supporters of the 2011 event raised $ 7,190.00 for the capital fund.38 |Saskatoon Kobzars in attendance: Patricia Hawryliw, StanyslawHawryliw, Adrian Boyko, Sonia Boyko, Ed Wojcichowsky and EvelynWojcichowsky, Sonia Mysak, Carol Kindrachuk, Slawko Kindrachuk ,Cec Kachkowski and Al Kachkowski, with Andriy Hladyshevsky andOksana Prokopchuk-Gauk.| 39

Oksana enteredthe Ivan Trush College ofDecorative Arts in 1996.There, she studied all aspects of art anddecided to make painting, especially ofmurals, her specialty. In 2001 she held her first solo exhibition atthe L’viv University of Ivan Franko. It was inpreparing her works for this show that sherealized she had a love for the medium ofoil. She finds that the truest hues are to befound in this medium due to its prolongeddrying time and its ease in mixing. Shefinds it best to begin her work, not on acrisp, blank canvas, but on one that hasbeen coloured, and or stained to allow herchosen medium to release its inner beautyand charm.Although aptly able to capture any image with an artist’s eyes,Oksana’s work as of late has revolved around the theme of womanin various stages, poses, and emotions. She equates her disdain ofstarting on a blank canvas to that of simply painting woman as anexercise in figure. In her view, woman is neither crisp nor blank, butOleh LesiukOleh Lesiuk was born in 1959 in Lviv, Ukraine. YEAR END REVIEW:2012 and beyondFrom the Chair of the Investment Committeeindependentauditors’reportThe first half of 2012 was a taleof two quarters; the first quarterrepresented the strongest startfor the U.S. stock market since1998, with Japan turning inits best first quarter gains intwenty-four years. This waslargely driven by a reductionof fears about Europe, as wellas stronger economic data inthe U.S.The second quarter gave manyof those gains back as the capital markets becameincreasingly volatile as Europe’s debt crisis escalatedonce again and questions of a slowdown in Chinaand the fragility of the recovery in the U.S. allcontinue to weigh on the markets. In this volatileenvironment, being nimble and tactical becomesall the more important. The Foundation continues to focus on:• Maintaining secure liquid funds to cover expensesand provide cash-flow for granting needs.• Determining the appropriate long-term allocationof assets between equities and fixed income.• Maintaining a broadly diversified portfolio, allocating investments between asset classes,by geography, sectors and by industry.• Searching for cash flow from investments. In anuncertain environment with respect to economicgrowth and equity returns, we continue to focuson the yield from investments. The cash-flowsfrom our fixed income and dividend payingequities continue to make sense to us in aneffort to get “paid” while we wait for growth. We believe that we should continue to have significantexposure to Canadian securities and to the Canadiandollar. However, through our portfolio managers,we carefully continue to systematically increase ourexposure to U.S. and international equities in bothour long-only equity portfolios as well as in ourlong-short alternative strategies. The Investment Committee continues to havea strong conviction that we can achieve theFoundation’s objectives: capital preservation, capitalappreciation, reliable income generation and positiveabsolute returns for the Foundation’s investments.Wallace Shoemaychair, investment commiteeTo the Board of Directors of the Ukrainian CanadianFoundation of Taras Shevchenko:The accompanying summarized financial statements, which comprise the summary statement of financialposition as at March 31, 2012 and the summarystatement of operations and changes in net assetsfor the year then ended, are derived from the auditedfinancial statements of the Ukrainian CanadianFoundation of Taras Shevchenko for the year endedMarch 31, 2012. 54 |in memoryofMYKOLA SUPRUN1923 – 2011Many Ukrainian stories are sad stories. Mykola Suprun’s life storyis a Ukrainian story. He was born on 17 December 1923 in Soviet Ukraine, into a familybranded by Communists as “seredniaky” or middle-class peasants.Their land was confiscated. Mykola’s father, Petro, resisted, insisting “it is better to die a free man in Ukraine than to be aslave in one’s own home.” For that defiance he was targeted by theNKVD, the secret police, and disappeared becoming one of themany millions of victims of Communism.Mykola’s mother Stepania was left to care forher children alone, amid a growing hunger. She entrusted 10 year old Mykola with takinghis two brothers, Sashko and Vasyl, to anorphanage, where she hoped they might survivethe Great Famine, the Holodomor. Whenit was discovered that they were“enemies of the people” the boys wereexpelled and returned home only to find theirmother bed-ridden. Mykola foragedin the nearby woods for anything ediblebut it was not enough. Sashko and Vasylstarved to death.Mykola was forced to work on a collective farm, made to runbehind the wagon that daily took workers into the fields, theprivilege of getting a ride reserved for those who complied withthe new regime. Decades later, in Canada, one of the childrenwho rode the wagon wound up living across the street fromMykola. Instead of holding a grudge or trying to settle old scores,he forgave that man. When Nazi Germany invaded the USSR, in late June 1941, theRed Army weapons depot near his village was blown up. Mykolabarely had time to run home and rescue his baby niece, Halya.Later, when the family cut trees to repair their damaged home theextra weight they were carting set off a landmine, killing Mykola’ssister, Maria. All he could find was her arm. In the spring of 1942he recovered the rest of her remains, and interred his sister asecond time. The tide of war turned against Germany and Mykola became aslave labourer in the Third Reich, clearing the rubble left afterAllied bombings. At war’s end he found himself in the British Zone ofOccupied Germany, at a Displaced Persons camp in Kiel. Although a“Soviet citizen” and liable to repatriation to the USSR, Mykola risked hisown freedom to sneak into the Soviet Zone and escort other Ukrainiansto the West. In July 1947 he found asylum in Canada, working for a pulpand paper company. After completing his two years of work, so paying forhis passage, he moved to Winnipeg. There he met his future wife, Iwanna(Jean) Chomischak, with whom he would raise a family of six.Instead of Saturday morning cartoons, the children were taken toUkrainian school and the Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM). OnSundays they attended the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedralwhere, from 1960, he was a parishoner. The family donned their embroideredshirts and blouses and in 1961 joined thousands of Ukrainian Canadiansin unveiling the Taras Shevchenko monument on the grounds of theManitoba Legislature. He often cited the words of Ukraine’s nationalbard: “only in one’s house does one have truth, strength and freedom.”Sadness returned to Mykola’s life when in 1970 his teenage son died inan unfortunate accident. Like Abraham of the Old Testament, Mykolaaccepted this tragedy as the will of God. Soon thereafter, he learned thathis mother, separated from him by the Iron Curtain, had survived, andwas being looked after by his niece, Halya. For years Mykola stomached the denial of the horrors he survived as ayoung boy, but thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress,in 1984 he attended the unveiling of the Holodomor Memorial at Winnipeg’sCity Hall. He wore the lapel pin reproduction on his suit for the remainderof his days.Eventually, Iwanna and Mykola became grandparents. He grewlegendary tomatoes and even managed to cultivate an orange tree in hisWinnipeg home as an homage to the forest that saved him. In retirement,he cared for his wife during her struggle with diabetes. She passed awayon 27 December 1996, aged 68. Mykola became a great-grandfatherwithout her.He faced the onset of Alzheimer’s with courage, even though he wasslowly robbed of many memories. He never complained and as his bodywas wracked he let his caregivers and family know that his spirit remainedwell by offering a loving smile. He passed away, on 7 September 2011,surrounded by family, knowing he was loved and will be remembered.Although Ukrainian stories are sad, Mykola taught us that the best way toget through the suffering that life brings to all is to do so with a smile.MARIA (MAKALO) LUCIUK1927 – 2012Maria Makalo was born in 1927 in thewestern Ukrainian village of Kurnyky. She was only 16 when the Germans came, transporting her to Bavaria, press-gangedinto the service of the Third Reich. She wasnot alone. Millions of Ukrainians suffereda similar fate. Many would not survive.Being young and petite, Maria was not thefirst choice of those selecting slaves for hardlabour. Paradoxically, that was lucky. Forwhen she was finally picked it was by a Bauer(farmer) whose ailing wife and two childrenneeded help. So Maria worked mainly inthe kitchen, able to scrounge food and evensneak some to the Polish POWs the farmerheld captive. Somehow her father, Stepan,a First World War veteran of the Austro-Hungarian army, and fluent in German, learned where his daughter was. Fromoccupied Ukraine he posted letters ofencouragement, those few sheets of paperbecoming some of her most preciouspossessions—for she would never seehim again.Still a teenager when the Second World Warended, in May 1945, Maria again foundherself among millions of people cast adrift, political refugees unwilling to return toSoviet-dominated eastern Europe. Therethe Stalinist regime was brutally suppressingUkrainian nationalism, a counterinsurgencycampaign that continuedwell into the 1950s. Maria’s father was amember of the resistance. Captured by theCommunists, Stepan perished rather thanrenounce the cause of Ukraine’s liberation. His final resting place is unknown. The IronCurtain then severed Maria’s ties to hermother, three brothers, and a sister, a chasmun-breached until the Soviet empire felland Ukraine regained its rightful place inEurope, almost a half century later. Not able to go home, Maria instead foundsanctuary in the ‘Freiman Kasserne’Displaced Persons camp, near Munich. There she joined the Organization ofUkrainian Nationalists, (OUNb), becominga trusted underground courier. It was adangerous time. Hundreds of thousandsof “Soviet citizens” were forcibly repatriatedto the USSR, there were politicalassassinations, widespread criminality, and a climate of fear, many believing aThird World War was imminent. So mostDPs lived “on packed suitcases,” motivatedby a “compulsive need to return home,”seeing themselves as the “second line” ofthe liberation movement, determined tohusband their Diaspora’s resources untilthey could get home. They believed thatwould happen soon. They were mistaken.Their exodus would last for decades.Unbeknownst to her, Maria came undersurveillance. One day he stopped her, inMunich’s famous ‘English Gardens.’ Fortunately, the man who crossed her path wasanother nationalist. His name was Danylo. He became her unofficial escort andbodyguard and, eventually, her husband, rarely leaving Maria’s side until she died, peacefully, in his arms, in their bed, in theirhome, after more than six decades ofhappily married life.Resettled from post-war Europe toKingston, Ontario, in 1949, Maria andDanylo found work, she at Hotel DieuHospital, he at Brock Jewellers. At first theylived in a Queen Street boarding house, onthe edge of Kingston’s immigrant andworking class “North End.” Wanting to starta family they moved to 68 Nelson St.,infusing their home with all things Ukrainian.Anyone crossing that threshold immediatelyentered what Maria and Danyloremembered or imagined Ukraine shouldbe like, a welcoming and happy place. Itstill is. When their children were born theynamed them Lubomyr, “Lover of Peace,”and Nadia, “Hope,” signalling what theiradopted homeland had given them—peace, love, and hope.In their early years in Canada Maria andDanylo encountered many fellow citizenswho knew little, if anything, about Ukraineor Ukrainians. She dedicated herself toovercoming that ignorance. Maria taughtUkrainian school, pushed her children tostudy hard, was a leading member ofSt Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish, afounding and lifelong member of the KingstonBranch of the Canadian League for theLiberation of Ukraine, helped establish theKingston and DistrictFolk Arts Council, the Ukrainian MakyDance Ensemble, theUkrainian CanadianClub of Kingston, andwas the heart and soulof the “Lviv, Ukraine”pavilion during Kingston’s annual “Folklore”festival, for 42 years. Her commitment toher culture and, in particular, to Ukrainianembroidery and traditional cooking, were adelight within her own hromada (community)and for the many thousands of Kingstoniansshe hosted over several decades. We will notsee the likes of her pyrohy (perogies) andholubtsi (cabbage rolls) again. And yet, while she always made sure people knewshe was a Ukrainian, and what that meantto her, Maria was equally keen on learningabout the lives and cultures of everyoneshe met, genuine in her advocacy of multiculturalism, believing it to be a strong pillargirding up Canada’s uniqueness as a society.Maria and Danylo’s enduring support forthe cause of Ukrainian independence—formany who knew them nothing but a quixoticémigré dream—was vindicated when theUSSR collapsed, in 1991. And, at almost thesame time, they became grandparents, whosavoured watching their granddaughter,Kassandra, become a woman and a youngscholar of modern Ukraine’s history. ForBaba and Dido (grandmother and grandfather)there could be no more satisfyinglegacy. On the evening before she died Maria spokeher last words, in Ukrainian: “Goodnight,my children.” Her family was with her whenshe passed on February 10, 2012. She wascalm and unafraid. Just like the Marywhose name she bore Maria had witnessedappalling suffering in her lifetime yetremained a woman of faith. Parting withmotherly words of comfort she finally wenthome, full of grace, to be with God, remindingus of the psalmist’s words: “for He grantssleep to those He loves.”| 55
