ZIMBABWE – CHOLERA OUTBREAKSANNEX 9:INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION <strong>OF</strong> RED CROSS AND RESCRESCENT SOCIETIESZimbabwe: CholeraEmergency appeal n° MDRZW004GLIDE n° EP-2008-000218-ZWEThis Emergency Appeal seeks10,170,233 (USD 9.2m or EUR6.6m) in cash, kind, or servicesto support the Zimbabwe RedCross Society (ZRCS) to assist1.5 million beneficiaries. Thisseven-month operation will becompleted by end-July 2009.A total of CHF 403,302 (USD359,372 or EUR 269,456) wasallocated from theFederation’s Disaster ReliefEmergency Fund (DREF) tosupport this operation.• CHF 203,302 (USD177,556 or EUR 139,248)allocated on 11 November,2008.• CHF 200,000 (USD181,818 or EUR 130,208)allocated on 12December, 2008.Summary: This EmergencyAppeal responds to a requestfrom the Zimbabwe Red CrossSociety (ZRCS) to respond toa quickly evolving choleracrisis in the country, andfocuses on supporting theMr. Zuze works for the Ministry of Environment and Health inKadoma. Normally he is responsible for running the home-based visitto prevent epidemics such as malaria and cholera, including clearingponds to avoid mosquito breeding. Since the establishment of a CTCin mid-November, Zuze and his team have been helping with clearingthe surrounding environment and off-loading equipment for the CTCs.“Cholera is not new to us, but this year, lack of nurses and medicinesin the hospital caused the spread of the disease. In the past, cholerais something we could put down within the hospital. The Red Crossbrought the big change. Patients are now sleeping on beds. Theassistance from Japanese Red Cross is excellent” said ZuzeNational Society to deliver appropriate and timely action in providing assistance and relief inthe water and sanitation (WatSan), health, and hygiene promotion sectors. A vitalcomponent of the operation are the Federation’s Emergency Response Units (ERUs) asfollows: three Basic Health Care (BHC) ERUs from the Finnish, Japanese and Norwegian RedCross, two Mass Sanitation ERUs from the British and Spanish Red Cross, and two WaterSupply ERUs from the German/Austrian and French Red Cross.COORDINATION AND PARTNERSHIPSCoordination mechanisms currently exist to varying degrees in each of the provinces, with theMoHCW, the provincial Civil Protection Units, the cluster system, UN agencies and other nongovernmentalorganizations. Coordination is crucial for this intervention and the ZRCS’s presence inall provinces and districts will ensure that the Red Cross is represented and participates in allcoordinating forums.
