The National Trust has completed the renovation and updating of Thorington Hall and is now seeking atenant for this very well preserved elegant 17c Hall House. The application in the hinterland betweenHigham and Shelley to which I referred last time was turned down by the Council – and I must admit toa degree of satisfaction at this outcome!David EkingPlanning Secretary, SuffolkTHE TEMPLE, STOKE BY NAYLANDThis small, elegant and beautifully proportioned building is all that remains of the splendours ofTendring Hall, the former home of the Rowley family which was demolished in 1954. It was built,probably as a fishing lodge to the design of Sir Robert Taylor around 1760 for the first Rowley to ownthe estate and predates Sir John Soane’s rebuild of the Hall itself and the landscaping of the gardens byHumphrey Repton by some 30 years. It was, and is, located at the west end of the garden canal whichhad been established by the previous owner of the Hall earlier in the 18c. A distinguished post wartenant was the famous interior designer David Hicks who is said to have been attracted to the Templewhen cycling past it as a child. The present occupant, also an interior designer, has maintained thesimple elegance of the building and its surroundings most sympathetically and expertly. A recentapplication to add a modest single storey extension on the southern side of the building has been rejectedby the District Council.Much of the historical detail in the note above has been abstracted from the “Lost Country House ofSuffolk” by W M Roberts of which further details are given inside the back cover of this Newsletter.David Eking18
