Leaders in Giving
The Leadership Circle
Dr. Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., then president of Wake Forest University, initiated the Leadership Circle in 1986. His
goal was to increase the involvement of professionals in addressing human service needs through United Way
of Forsyth County. In its first year, the Leadership Circle had 400 members and gave $550,000 to United Way.
The Leadership Circle has grown dramatically since its inception. In 2009, 3,902 members gave a total of
$8,264,545, 48 percent of the overall campaign. When corporate giving and grants are excluded, giving by
Leadership Circle members comprised 68 percent of all employee and individual giving.
United Way of Forsyth County is pleased to acknowledge the philanthropy of our Leadership Circle givers. Their
substantial investment in our community is advancing the common good by creating real, long-lasting change
that will prevent many problems from occurring in the first place.
