The Paul Fulton Tocqueville <strong>Leaders</strong>hip Society Award is presented annually by the Society to an outstanding<br />
volunteer who has exemplified untiring commitment, visionary leadership, resourcefulness and creativity in<br />
meeting the needs of our community.<br />
Kelly King is chairman and<br />
chief executive officer of BB&T<br />
Corporation. King has a long<br />
association with United Way. He<br />
served on the board of United<br />
Way of Wake County, chairing a<br />
successful campaign in 1994.<br />
A long-time member of the<br />
Tocqueville <strong>Leaders</strong>hip Society,<br />
he chaired the society in 2006<br />
and 2007.<br />
Before his election to CEO, King served as BB&T’s<br />
chief operating officer from 2004 to 2008. Joining<br />
BB&T’s management team in 1972, he has served in<br />
many roles.<br />

He currently chairs the Piedmont Triad <strong>Leaders</strong>hip<br />
Group and serves on the boards of The Clearing<br />
House, The Financial Services Roundtable,<br />
N.C. Chamber of Commerce, and the Triangle<br />
Community Foundation <strong>Leaders</strong>hip Council. In<br />
January 2009, he was named a director of The<br />
Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.<br />
King received his bachelor’s degree in business<br />
administration and his M.B.A. from East Carolina<br />
University. He also attended the Stonier Graduate<br />
School of Banking at Rutgers University.<br />
He is a former teacher and small group leader for<br />
Men’s Bible Study at the First Baptist Church of<br />
Winston-Salem.<br />
