Leaders in Giving
The Tocqueville Leadership Society
The Tocqueville Leadership Society is named for the French historian and author who came to America in 1831
and praised the Americans for voluntarily assisting their neighbors in times of need. The desire to recognize
individuals who exemplify this spirit of volunteerism for the common good prompted United Way of America to
create the national Tocqueville Leadership Society in 1972 and name it after the young French aristocrat.
In 1985, John Burress and Paul Fulton co-founded the local chapter of the Tocqueville Leadership Society for
individuals contributing $10,000 a year or more to the United Way of Forsyth County. In 2011, 218 members of
the Tocqueville Leadership Society contributed $3,366,104 to the United Way campaign. Many also attended
the Tocqueville Leadership Society Forums designed to inform them about specific aspects of United Way’s
Community Impact mission and to gain their valuable input.
Tocqueville Leadership Society History
“When Americans ask for the cooperation of their fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it
afforded spontaneously and with great good will.”
