The Paul Fulton Tocqueville <strong>Leaders</strong>hip Society Award is presented annually by the Society to an outstanding<br />
volunteer who has exemplified untiring commitment, visionary leadership, resourcefulness and creativity in<br />
meeting the needs of our community.<br />
2009 Recipient<br />
Susan M. Ivey<br />
Susan M. Ivey is chairman,<br />
president and chief executive<br />
officer of Reynolds American Inc.,<br />
and chairman of R.J. Reynolds<br />
Tobacco Company.<br />
Ivey has had a major influence on<br />
local non-profits since moving<br />
to Winston-Salem in 2004. She<br />
serves on the Women’s <strong>Leaders</strong>hip<br />
Initiative for United Way of America<br />
and championed the formation of the local Women’s<br />
<strong>Leaders</strong>hip Council in 2007. Ivey was the driving force<br />

behind the R.J. Reynolds Foundation’s $1 million<br />
5-year challenge grant for building membership<br />
in the Women’s <strong>Leaders</strong>hip Council and serves as<br />
honorary chair of the Council. She chaired United<br />
Way of Forsyth County’s 2007 Campaign — the most<br />
successful on record — and sits on United Way’s<br />
Board of Directors.<br />
Ivey is a board member of Salem Academy and<br />
College, Senior Services, the YWCA of Greater<br />
Winston-Salem, Wake Forest University, and the<br />
University of Florida Foundation.<br />
