Our Mission 

Our United Way leads in uniting the community to bring together resources to identify 

and effectively address our community’s most vital human needs. 

United Way of Forsyth County 

The organization we know today as United Way of Forsyth County was organized in 1923 under the banner of the Community 

Chest. The Community Chest of Forsyth County federated the finances of twenty local health and welfare organizations, 

raising the money in one annual campaign and distributing it according to need among its member organizations. The 

Community Chest’s campaigns were called “Red Feather” drives. The first Community Chest goal was $28,000 with 

$38,215 actually raised. 

Over the decades that followed, the name of the organization changed as has our mission. In 1951, the Community Chest 

became the United Fund of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. In 1974, the United Fund adopted the name still in use 

today: United Way of Forsyth County. 

Our Mission and History 

Our mission has evolved from being a community fundraiser in support of a family of partner agencies to one of addressing 

the root causes of our community’s most critical human issues while still supporting a safety net of services for those in 

immediate need. 

The 2008 Campaign, led by BB&T’s Steven Wiggs, raised $17,423.087, despite a very difficult economy. Over 400 

organizations and more than 40,000 individuals participated in the 2008 Campaign.

A Special Thank You to BB&T 

A Special Thank You to BB&T 

In an unprecedented expression of admiration and commitment to community, BB&T honored Betty and John 

Allison with a gift of $250,000 to the Tarheel Triad Girl Scouts, a United Way partner agency. Betty Allison is a longtime 

Girl Scout adviser, supporter, and leader who has served on the agency’s board for ten years. Her husband, 

John Allison, chairs BB&T Corporation’s board of directors and is the bank’s former CEO. His commitment to 

improving communities where BB&T has a presence is well-known. 

United Way of Forsyth County offers a special thank you to the Allisons and BB&T for their support. During a 

difficult economic period that limited campaign growth in the vast majority of companies, BB&T took the lead 

from its own mission of “making the communities in which we work better places to be.” 

Steve Wiggs, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, served as 2008 United Way Campaign 

Chair and led an outstanding effort despite severe economic challenges. Under his leadership, BB&T sponsored 

an innovative matching program that provided a $100,000 challenge grant to incent first-time corporate gifts at 

44 organizations and contributed the resources to develop our 2008 campaign video and advertising campaign. 

In addition, BB&T ran an outstanding employee campaign, increasing employee gifts by 11 percent and winning 

a Spirit of North Carolina Award. Overall, the 2009 United Way Campaign at BB&T produced more than $1.3 

million. 

BB&T’s support of United Way has been outstanding for many years. In 2008, it was nothing short of exceptional 

and has allowed United Way to take even greater strides in advancing the common good in Forsyth County.

The Leadership Circle 

Dr. Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., then president of Wake Forest University, initiated the Leadership Circle in 1986. His 

goal was to increase the involvement of professionals in addressing human service needs through United Way 

of Forsyth County. In its first year, the Leadership Circle had 400 members and gave $550,000 to United Way. 

In 2008, over 4,100 members gave $8.4 million, 48 percent of the campaign total. 

United Way of Forsyth County is pleased to acknowledge the philanthropy of our Leadership Circle givers. Their 

substantial investment in our community is advancing the common good by creating real, long-lasting change 

that will prevent many problems from occurring in the first place. 

The Women’s Leadership Council 

In 2008, the Women’s Leadership Council built on its charter year successes. Forsyth Medical Center’s Sallye 

A. Liner served as chair, Hanesbrands’ Nadine Hall served as vice chair, and Reynolds American’s Susan Ivey 

served as the honorary chair. 

The mission of the Women’s Leadership Council is to engage, educate and empower women to make a positive 

impact in Forsyth County. The Women’s Leadership Council’s mission is generously supported by a $1 million 

grant from the R. J. Reynolds Foundation which allows new members access to matching funds totaling $200,000 

annually for five years. In 2008, the Women’s Leadership Council grew to 815 members and raised $320,000 in 

addition to the $200,000 R.J. Reynolds Foundation match. 

The Women’s Leadership Council is aligned with Graduating Our Future, United Way’s “breakthrough initiative” 

to improve the high school graduation rate to 90 percent by 2018 and supports three successful programs at 

Philo Magnet Academy. 

While the United Way benefits each year from the women in this community who support all of our work, the 

Women’s Leadership Council provides a more focused approach designed to deal with specific issues. To 

acknowledge their support, members are listed in the Women’s Leadership Council booklet and are also identified 

in Leaders in Giving by the w following their names. We are most grateful to them for their generous, caring 

spirit demonstrated by joining us in this new endeavor to improve the quality of life for all in our community.

The Women’s Leadership Council


The Paul Fulton Tocqueville Leadership Society 

The Tocqueville Leadership Society is named for the French historian and author who came to America in 1831 

and praised the Americans for voluntarily assisting their neighbors in times of need. The desire to recognize 

individuals who exemplify this spirit of volunteerism for the common good prompted United Way of America to 

create the national Tocqueville Leadership Society in 1972 and name it after the young French aristocrat. 

In 1985, Paul Fulton co-founded the local chapter of the Tocqueville Leadership Society for individuals contributing 

$10,000 a year or more to the United Way of Forsyth County. In 2008, 206 members of the Tocqueville Leadership 

Society contributed over $3.3 million to the United Way campaign. Many also attended the Tocqueville Leadership 

Society Forums designed to inform them about specific aspects of United Way’s Community Impact mission and 

to gain their valuable input.

The Paul Fulton Tocqueville Leadership Society Award is presented annually by the Society to an outstanding 

volunteer who has exemplified untiring commitment, visionary leadership, resourcefulness and creativity in 

meeting the needs of our community.

Susan M. Ivey 

Susan M. Ivey is chairman, 

president and chief executive 

officer of Reynolds American Inc., 

and chairman of R.J. Reynolds 

Tobacco Company. 

Ivey has had a major influence on 

local non-profits since moving 

to Winston-Salem in 2004. She 

serves on the Women’s Leadership 

Initiative for United Way of America 

and championed the formation of the local Women’s 

Leadership Council in 2007. Ivey was the driving force

behind the R.J. Reynolds Foundation’s $1 million 

5-year challenge grant for building membership 

in the Women’s Leadership Council and serves as 

honorary chair of the Council. She chaired United 

Way of Forsyth County’s 2007 Campaign — the most 

successful on record — and sits on United Way’s 

Board of Directors. 

Ivey is a board member of Salem Academy and 

College, Senior Services, the YWCA of Greater 

Winston-Salem, Wake Forest University, and the 

University of Florida Foundation.
