Welcome to A.D.U.P.P. A Drug-Free Youth Coalition Congratulations on becoming a member of a new generation — a builder of a drug and alcohol free coalition, in which you will be looked upon as a leader, because you will be. It is up to you to build a group that forms the foundation of support for each and every member of this force — including yourself. By enlisting other members in your drug-free circle, they will begin enlisting others who want to remain drug and alcohol free as well. You will be creating your own positive peer group, with a growing recognition by other groups as to the power of this evergrowing amount of people who are committed to remaining drug and alcohol free. Now the people who use drugs and alcohol are the minority — and even more important than that — they are not united, they may have no foundation, few principles, little self respect, no larger support group to stand by them in their fight to push these deadly drugs on you. They have no power to control you! Sheer numbers of drug free members can stand up for one another to confront these unfortunate, lost souls. After you have proven to them that they cannot break your drug-free spirit, you may offer them a chance at a new beginning in your larger support group, and help them to become drug free as well. Help them to realize the dangers of drugs and alcohol — your peer group has an obligation to do good things for people. Note: Do not use your group to intimidate other people that are not out to harm you. If you abuse the power of authority, you will be no better than those who try to force you into using drugs and alcohol against your will. In this conversation with you I would like to tell you what you can expect to lose by using drugs and alcohol. I have spent 16 12 years looking at the effects of drug and alcohol use, and believe these conclusions of mine to be fairly accurate: The first time you use drugs or alcohol, you lose the will to say no. Why? Because you have already said yes. You gave in to peer pressure and let someone else tell you what to do. In other words, you lost will-power. You may think you have a new friend, but that person is not your friend. They are trying to influence you to do what they want. A real friend likes you for who you are - not what they can make you into. The lesson here is: Walk away from those who want to control you. You control yourself, so use your own self-control! People who use drugs may have have little little self-control, or self or self respect. respect. They They deliberately abuse their mind and bodies. Drugs and alcohol affect every living cell delibin your body - they actually alter body chemistry. Your body is going through miraculous changes of its own right now - don’t interfere with it. Those people who use drugs and alcohol may never reach their full potential as a result of irreversible physical damage to their brains, (brain cells don’t grow back), may also contract life-long illness or fail to fully develop during their growth periods. Because you may know more about drugs/alcohol and tobacco than the people who use them, you should try to help these people realize the damage that these drugs can do, invite them to a meeting of yours and together you can all discuss the problems that are associated with the use of the destructive substances. (You might just help someone to see the benefits of not using drugs). You may copy your sections on alcohol and tobacco and give them to these people so they can see for themselves what can happen.
