EXOFFICIO PHILANTHROPY
2011 was the deadliest year for elephants since ivory
was banned in 1989. More than 100 elephants are killed
every day. National Geographic explorers Andy Maser and
Trip Jennings teamed up with the Center for Conservation
Biology at the University of Washington to identify
poaching hotspots. It is crucial to determine which
populations are targets before these herds are pushed
to the brink of extinction.
The EIP team trekked into the jungle of the Democratic
Republic of Congo, a major source of illegal ivory, to
collect DNA samples. They will be analyzed and matched
to illegal ivory seizures to identify where the elephants
lived. Andy is creating media to raise awareness of the
elephantsÕ plight before it is too late. Interacting with
the world in such a way as to improve it and ourselves is
a guiding principle at ExOfficio, and we hope to inspire
others to do the same. Together with the Elephant Ivory
Project, we hope to inspire you to take action to save
our wild elephants. Connect with us online and share an
experience that inspired you to give back.
