Big Moments in Comet Football History<br />

1958- First game played in inaugural GHS season: a 0-0 tie vs Cahokia<br />

1962- Mike Bishop “waded through 4 or 5 Vandal defenders to reach the end zone,” late in the 4th quarter and GHS beat Vandalia for their<br />

first win over the Vandals as the Comets<br />

1963- Gary Melton blocks a punt in the 4th qtr, which sets up a GHS scoring drive to beat defending conference champ Hillsboro, 12-6.<br />

1965- Football team upgrades technology: A telephone connects coaches on the sideline with the booth upstairs. Film study is done for<br />

the first time with the aid of movie projectors.<br />

1967- Tom Kallal is first GHS football player named to the Illinois All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The team consisted of<br />

Illinois’ Top 33 players, south of Bloomington.<br />

1972- GHS tops 2,000 yard rushing mark for a season for the first time, shattering the old record of 1,771 set by the 1967 team. GHS also<br />

sets marks for points in a season (150) and Tom Lowe set the single season rushing mark with 859.<br />

1973- GHS ends Effingham’s 23 game Mid-State Conference winning streak by shutting out the Flaming Hearts 24-0.<br />

1982- Tim Ridings kicked the game-winning field goal with under 1 minute left in the game as the Comets defeated Triad 9-7 to win the<br />

first IHSA playoff game in history.<br />

1982- Comets host first ever playoff game in GHS history in the frigid cold as they defeat #1 seed Harrisburg in the IHSA Quarterfinals 33-6.<br />

1985- Comets earn a huge win on the road over state-ranked Triad, 24-11.<br />

1986- Comets upset #2 state ranked Hillsboro, 18-7.<br />

1990- Comets defeat Gillespie 47-21. Gillespie ends up being 2A State Runner-Up.<br />

1993- Jim O’Boyle recovers a fumble late in the game to secure a Comet 26-20 win over #2 ranked 3A Mater Dei Knights.<br />

1995- Scott Pruitt sends GHS into the off-season with a win by kicking a 37 yard field goal with seconds remaining to win at Nashville 16-15.<br />

1997- In a week nine showdown to qualify for the playoffs, GHS wins at East Alton (Wood River) 43-40.<br />

2000- Zach Johnson’s “Hail Mary” touchdown pass to Clay Kniepmann as time expires lifts the Comets to a 13-10 victory over Vandalia.<br />

2004- After holding Litchfield to a field goal to begin the 3rd overtime, Greenville’s Joe Baumberger races untouched around left end for a TD and a<br />

41-38 win on the road. The victory hands the Panthers their only conference loss of the season and gives GHS the SCC East Division championship.<br />

2005- Comets defense allows only 48 points during regular season and records 6 shutouts en route to a conference title.<br />

2005- Chad Nelson returns a punt for a touchdown in the 4th quarter to propel GHS to a 7-0 win over Litchfield giving the Comets a share of the SCC East<br />

crown with Hillsboro.<br />

2007- Josh Tebbe’s touchdown pass to Erik Fohne gives the Comets the lead for good as they win 17-7 at Du Quoin to advance to the IHSA Quarterfinals.<br />

2007- Class 3A semifinals- Despite 265 yards rushing and 4 TD’s from Nick Koonce GHS falls 40-39 to Columbia in double overtime.<br />

2008- Despite not playing a single game on their home field because of construction, the “Road Warriors” go 9-0 in the regular season and advance to<br />

the IHSA 3A Quarterfinals.<br />

2009- Class 3A semifinals- GHS falls behind 44-17 early in 3rd quarter but rallies only to fall 58-53 to Tolono (Unity). Todd Eaton throws for a then 3A<br />

record 467 yards. The 111 points sets a 3A playoff scoring record.<br />

2010- Comets 35 game regular season winning streak comes to an end on Week 6 vs Pana.<br />

2011- Greenville spends six weeks as the #1 ranked team in Illinois Class 3A.<br />

2011- 3A Second Round- Comets drive length of the field late in the game as Brady Huber connects with Brad Perry for an incredible game-winning touch<br />

down pass. Comets win 20-15.<br />

2011- 3A Quarterfinals- Comets score a touchdown on all 10 possessions to defeat North Mac, 68-38.<br />

2012- Week 8- Cameron Walter breaks single game school record for rushing yards with 342 Yards vs Gillespie (all in first half). Walter did not play a<br />

snap in the second half.<br />

2012- 3A Quarterfinals- Comets overcome 21 point deficit at Carterville to defeat the Lions 49-38 and advance to the Semifinals.<br />

Nov 12, 2013- 3A Quarterfinals- Comets overcome 21 point deficit in the last 3:30 of the game to defeat Mt. Carmel 71-70 at “The Pit” in Mt. Carmel.<br />

Numerous State and National Records were set in this game.<br />

Oct 10, 2014- Senior QB Tyler Hutchinson becomes the IHSA’s career leader for passing yards with a 15 yd pass to his sophomore brother, Ryan.<br />

Comets won at Staunton.
