2012-13 Season Outlook University of St. Francis women’s basketball tips off a new era in 2012-13 as Samantha Quigley begins her tenure as the 12th head coach in the program’s history. As an assistant to interim head coach Brian Michalak one season ago, Quigley helped guide the Saints to a 17-14 record. Only four players return from last year’s squad, but all four were key contributors who started a combined 82 games. That group along with a solid corps of incoming freshmen gives Quigley a strong foundation on which to launch her coaching debut. “I would love for us to become a nationally-known team,” said Quigley. “I think it will take a bit of time, but we brought in a great recruiting class, and the players who returned set a standard for the program last year. I think things are going in the right direction.” Headlining the Saints’ returnees is sophomore Katie Gonnering, who leaped onto the scene as a freshman a year ago. The 5’10” forward was named an NAIA honorable mention All-American and voted to the All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team after ranking second in the league in scoring (16.6) and third in rebounding (8.4). She tallied double digits in scoring in 20 of 28 games and poured in 20 or more points on 10 occasions. Also returning in the frontcourt is senior Ashley Teresiak, who averaged better than 11 points and six boards while starting 23 games as a junior college transfer in 2011-12. She led the CCAC and ranked third in the NAIA with an .886 free throw percentage and stood fourth among the conference leaders in defensive rebounding (5.0). Junior Morgan Novak, USF’s most experienced player (49 games), also returns in the frontcourt. The only Saint to start all 31 games in 2011-12, sophomore Cydney Weisflog is the lone backcourt returnee from last year’s team. One of the top three-point shooters in the CCAC, she averaged 8.2 points per game while hitting a team-high 35 treys in her debut campaign. Senior Marissa Draper returns to action this season after being sidelined by injury all of last year. She played in 43 games from 2009-11 and averaged 4.6 points and 3.3 rebounds primarily in a reserve capacity. Junior Paige Stankus, who saw limited action in 2010-11 before sitting out last season, and sophomore Kaitlyn Ray, injured all of 2011-12, look to bolster the backcourt. Seven freshmen join the team, many of whom are forecast as major contributors this coming season. “We are a bit young,” Quigley commented. “We will be an energetic and enthusiastic team, which is something I have always been a part of.” USF will feature four freshmen in the backcourt, including all-state honorees Alexis Brown and Debra Jenkins. Brown was an honorable mention all-state performer at Belleville East High School, where she averaged better than 15 points per game while leading her team in assists her final two seasons. Jenkins was a two-time all-state special mention pick at Chicago’s Morgan Park High School. An All-Chicago Public League pick in 2010 and 2011, she averaged 10 points, eight assists and six steals her senior year. Local product Khadija Cooley, the MVP for Joliet West High School each of the past two years, and Mary Jackson, from Charleston High School, are also expected to vie for significant playing time. Jackson played golf for the Saints this past fall. In the frontcourt, Quigley will look to LaTrece Harris and Denitsa Owikoti to play a major role this season. The 5’10” Harris was a Chicago Public League All-Star after helping lead Bogan High School to a 17-8 mark and a berth in the CPL semifinals last winter.
