2012-13 USF Fighting Saints Men’s Basketball 1

Head Coach John Baines
John Baines enters his
third season as University
of St. Francis head
men’s basketball coach
in 2012-13.
In his inaugural campaign
in 2010-11, the
Fighting Saints finished
the year with a 21-10
overall record. The 21
wins were an improvement
of 13 games from
the previous season,
which ranked as the
second-biggest improvement
in the NAIA
that year. The Saints’
.677 winning percentage
also ranked as the
sixth-best in school history and marked USF’s best record in
21 years. With their successful season, the Fighting Saints also
gained national recognition by being ranked as high as No. 24
in the NAIA Division I coaches’ poll during the year.
Baines became just the third head men’s basketball coach
in the 41-year history of the St. Francis program. He replaced
34-year veteran Pat Sullivan, who retired at the conclusion of
the 2009-10 season.
Baines, 37, is a native of Bloomington, Ill., and played basketball
at Illinois Wesleyan University for Hall of Fame coach
Dennie Bridges. As a four-year player for Bridges and the Titans,
he was part of teams that compiled an overall record
of 103-14, participated in two NCAA Division III Final Fours,
three Elite Eights and four Sweet Sixteens. The Titans won the
Division III national championship in 1997 after placing third
in the nation one year earlier.
Baines began his coaching career in 1998 as the sophomore
basketball and baseball coach at Bloomington (Ill.)
High School. He moved to Elmhurst two years later where he
began a 10-year association with Bluejays’ head basketball
coach Mark Scherer. During his 10 seasons under Scherer, Baines
helped the Bluejays compile a 160-99 record. Additionally,
Elmhurst posted the five best won-lost records in school
history and reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division
III tournament in one of two national tourney appearances
during that time.
In his first season at Elmhurst in 2000-01, Baines helped
Scherer direct the Bluejays to a school-best 22-5 record and
the only College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW)
title in the program’s 63-year history. The team advanced to
the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Division III tournament
that year and was ranked as high as sixth nationally during the
course of the season.
That marked just the first of six times in a 10-year span
when Elmhurst placed either first or second in the prestigious
CCIW. The Bluejays added two more seasons with 20 or more
wins - 21-6 in 2006-07 and 20-8 in 2008-09 - and returned
to the national tournament again following the 2008-09 campaign.
As the chief recruiter on Scherer’s staff, Baines helped
lure 16 Illinois All-State players to Elmhurst. All of his fouryear
and transfer recruits either graduated or were on track
to earn their degrees from Elmhurst upon his departure.
Emphasizing academics as well as basketball, Baines helped
to oversee an Elmhurst team that posted a cumulative 3.00
grade point average for most of his tenure.
Baines’ duties at Elmhurst were not limited to coaching
basketball. During his decade at EC, Baines served at various
times as assistant to the athletic director (2006-2010), head
women’s golf coach (2003-06) and head men’s tennis coach
(2000-04). He coached a pair of All-CCIW golfers in his three
seasons with the women’s golf program and directed the
men’s tennis squad to its second-best record in school history
in 2004.
Baines has been a part of successful high school and
small college basketball programs ever since he enrolled at
University High School in Normal, Ill. Over the course of the
last 20 years, Baines has a record of 405-175 as a player, assistant
coach, and head coach.
Baines graduated from Illinois Wesleyan in 1998 with a
bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in secondary
education. He earned a master’s in sports administration
from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003.
Baines, who also serves as USF’s assistant women’s golf
coach, is single and resides in Chicago.
Assistant Coaches
John Ford
John Ford brings more than a decade of international playing experience to his new role as a member
of the St. Francis coaching staff this season.
Ford spent the previous eight years playing professional basketball in Bordeaux, France, following
stints in Finland as well as in the Continental Basketball Association, American Basketball Association
and the Independent Basketball Association in the U.S. He retired as a player in 2011.
A native of Joliet, Ford graduated from Joliet West High School in 1996 before attending Colorado
State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 2000.
Ford resides in Joliet with his wife Debra, son John and daughter Khali.
Steve Kollar
Steve Kollar joined the St. Francis coaching staff in 2010-2011, where he was reunited with thennew
USF head coach John Baines.
Kollar was a guard at Elmhurst College from 2001-04 during Baines' 10-year tenure as an assistant
coach. He played high school basketball at Wheaton North High School before moving on to Elmhurst.
Kollar began his coaching career in the fall of 2005 as the freshman "B" team baseball and basketball
coach at Wheaton North High School. He spent the next year coaching football there, tutoring the
freshmen quarterbacks and serving as the freshmen team’s assistant offensive coordinator.
He then moved on to South Elgin High School where he coached both the freshman "A" team
and the sophomore squad over the next two seasons. He coached the freshmen at West Aurora High
School in 2009-10. Kollar earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Elmhurst and his
master's in education from Aurora University. He resides in Wheaton.
Jesse Woods
Jesse Woods begins his second season as an assistant to head coach John Baines.
Upon graduation from Shawano (Wis.) Community High School in 2002, Woods attended University
of St. Thomas (Minn.) from 2002-06. He competed for the Tommies for two seasons (2002-04)
before a recurring injury sidelined him for the remainder of his tenure at UST. Woods maintained a
3.67 GPA while earning degrees in English, French Literature and Spanish.
In 2010, Woods completed his master of arts degree from McGill University (Montreal, Quebec).
He walked on to the 12-man roster and competed for the Redmen from 2008-10. During that time as
a two-year starter, Woods served as the team co-captain and helped MGU to an overall record of 8-8
in his final campaign.
Woods resides in Chicago.
Student Assistant Lukas Zebrauskas
Following a highly-successful four-year playing career at St. Francis, Lucas Zebrauskas joins the staff
as a student assistant coach this season.
Zebrauskas earned All-CCAC accolades each of the past two seasons. He capped his playing career
in 2011-12 by finishing among the league’s top eight in three separate statistical categories. In 10
league games, he ranked third in rebounding (8.1 rpg), fifth in field goal percentage (.536) and eighth
in scoring (12.5 ppg). In all games, Zebrauskas tallied 12.0 points per game and pulled down 6.8 rebounds
per contest.
Zebrauskas graduated this past spring with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is
pursing an MBA at St. Francis.
2012-13 USF Fighting Saints Men’s Basketball 3

2012-13 Season Outlook
For the University of St. Francis men’s basketball program and
third-year head coach John Baines, the 2012-13 campaign will
bear little resemblance to last season.
Most notably, the Saints’ roster will feature eight newcomers
as only two starters and five other players return from
last year’s 15-16 squad. Gone are eight players who started a
combined 111 games and produced two-thirds of the team’s
scoring and rebounding a season ago.
Another significant difference is the Chicagoland Collegiate
Athletic Conference’s shift to the NAIA Division II – a change
that will result in 24 of the Saints’ 30 contests designated as
conference games.
Experienced Trio Lead Solid Backcourt
“I think the backcourt is the strength of our team,” was Baines’
assessment of his guard corps heading into the new season.
Headlining that unit will be sophomore point guard Chris
Miller, junior shooting guard Andrew Lerg and senior swingman
Billy Hubly.
Andrew Lerg
Miller was named the
CCAC Freshman of the
Year last winter after
averaging 9.8 points
per game and shooting
40.8% from three-point
distance – second-best
in the CCAC – in his
rookie campaign. The
5-11 Miller played in all
31 games and started
16.
As well as he performed
last year, Baines expects
even more out of Miller
as he continues to
develop.
“Chris Miller has really
changed his game,”
Baines said. “Mentally
and physically he has
become a completely
different player than he
was as a freshman – and
he had a solid freshman
year. He is one of our
best players.”
Lerg established himself
among the conference’s
top guards a year ago
when he was selected
Chris Miller
to the All-CCAC Second Team in his second year as a starter. En
route to averaging 10.2 points per game, he was the league’s
third-most accurate (39.9%) and fourth-most prolific (71, 2.3
per game) three-point shooter. Lerg, who has played in 60 of
61 games during his career, buried a trey in 28 of 31 games.
“Andrew Lerg is one of the best three-point shooters in the
league,” Baines said.
Returning to the floor after missing all of last season with a hip
injury, Hubly is USF’s most experienced and decorated player.
Since 2008, he has appeared in 85 games with 54 starts and
has been tabbed All-CCAC three times.
In 2010-11, Hubly garnered All-CCAC First Team accolades
after scoring 10.8 points per game while ranking second in the
league in three-point baskets (2.5 per game) and three-point
percentage (40.5). He burst onto the scene as a freshman in
2008-09, shooting 43.5% from the behind the arc – good for
13th-best in the NAIA.
Hubly has ranked among the top five most accurate and productive
three-point shooters in the CCAC in each of his previous
three seasons.
In Miller, Lerg and Hubly, the Saints boast three of the top
outside shooting threats throughout the CCAC.
“In all my years in coaching, this might be one of the best shooting
teams I have been associated with,” Baines remarked. “We
will definitely be a perimeter-oriented team.”
A mix of veterans and newcomers will also vie for time
4 2012-13 USF Fighting Saints Men’s Basketball

2012-13 Season Outlook
in the backcourt. Among
them are freshmen Edvinas
Presniakovas, Brian Edwards
and Mack Brown.
“We have several young
guys who are very talented,”
said Baines. “Edvinas
Presniakovas is a solid allaround
player who was a
great scorer in high school.
Brian Edwards is an unbelievable
athlete who can do
things I can’t coach. Mack
Brown is a very good point
guard.”
Juniors Max and Sebastian
Thurner and sophomore
Jaylen Thompson, each of
whom played in at least 16
games last season, round
out the backcourt along with
freshman Brandon Sawin.
Freshman Kyle Richwalski, the tallest Saint at 6-9, should bolster
a young but promising frontcourt.
Conference Call
With the CCAC’s move to NAIA Division II, each of the league’s
13 teams will play 24 conference games starting in early
November. As a result, USF will play its first league contest on
Nov. 7 – its third game of the year – and will have eight conference
affairs under its belt before Christmas.
“This could be one of the weirdest years for me as a coach,
with 24 conference games [USF played only 10 a year ago and
will play 19 beginning in 2013-14],” said Baines.
“It has accelerated our teaching. Normally we have until mid-
December before we have to prepare for conference play, but
this year we will have to get it together earlier.”
Among the Saints’ six nonconference games are matchups
with NCAA Division II Lewis University as well as perenniallysolid
NAIA rivals Ashford University and Huntington College.
Billy Hubly
New Faces in the Frontcourt
St. Francis’ frontcourt will feature an almost entirely new look
in 2012-13 as only one player on this year’s roster – senior
Michael Cole – returns from a season ago.
Cole, who was limited by injuries to appearing in 11 contests
last year, appears physically ready to go, according to Baines.
He is forecast as the Saints’ starting center.
“Michael Cole is in the best shape he has ever been in for us.
He is our most physical rebounder, a real junkyard dog-type
who has been around the block.”
Joining Cole in the frontcourt will be junior transfer Mark
Peters, who spent the past two seasons at CCAC rival Saint
Xavier University where he was a two-time all-conference pick
averaging just under 10 points per contest. Baines is excited
about Peters’ arrival.
“We will get a big boost from Mark Peters. He has played very
well in preseason and has shown that he can do a lot of things.
Our offense is tailor made for him.”
Baines also projects junior college transfer Tautvydas Kairys
and freshman Logan Timmons as impact players.
“TK reminds me of Toni Kukoc. He’s rangy and can shoot as
well as drive to the basket. He gives us a new dimension on
offense. Logan Timmons needs to put on some size, but he is a
very good defender and rebounder.”
Patrick J. Sullivan Center
PAT SULLIVAN CENTER/PAT QUIGLEY COURT
The centerpiece of St. Francis Athletics – the Pat Sullivan Center – opened in 1986 and serves as the home
venue for the Saints’ men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team. The facility also houses
the athletic department offices, the athletic training room, the USF Fitness Center, two racquetball courts,
a golf hitting studio and numerous locker rooms.
The Recreation Center was renamed the Pat Sullivan Center in the fall of 2010. Sullivan was the long-time
men’s basketball coach (1976-2010), director of athletics (1986-2000) and athletics chairman (2000-10)
for the Saints prior to his retirement following the 2009-10 basketball season.
The playing court in the Sullivan Center was named after the late Pat Quigley back in 1994. Quigley, a
member of the USF Hall of Fame who completed his basketball playing career in 1981, lost his battle
with cancer in 1994. Several of his USF teammates, led by his close friends Mike Brennan and Ron Kenny,
spearheaded a drive to donate scholarship funds in honor of their classmate and have the court dedicated
in his memory.
The Sullivan Center has taken on a new look in the past two years. New scoreboards and a courtside
scorer’s table and message center were added prior to the 2010-11 seasons. A large banner with the
Fighting Saints’ new logo was displayed on the west wall. The playing court was refinished and repainted
in the summer of 2011 and new wall padding and a new sound system were added this past summer.
