The wearing of adequate and appropriate head protection in the 

workplace is vital. For OHS stakeholders refer to AS/NZS 1801 

which provides the basis for correct selection. 

Under the criteria of Australian Standards several factors need 

to be considered in relation to the life expectancy of a hard hat 

and its components. 

1) AS/NZS1801 states that safety caps and safety helmets 

have a recommended life of up to three years from the date 

of issue. 

2) The hard hat harness should, as best practice, be replaced 

every two years. 

3) Before using a hard hat always check for cracks, 

fading or abnormal wear, dull or chalky surface and 

brittleness. Replace immediately if any of these factors 

are present. 

4) Reduce exposure to extended heat and sunlight by 

storing in a bag or locker rather than a vehicle parcel shelf 

as this will assist with maintaining the integrity of the head 

protector. 

What Type of Head Protection Should Be Selected? 

Type 1 ABS Safety Cap - This is the most commonly 

worn head protection in construction and general industrial 

applications. It comes with or without a gutter for rain and 

chemical dust considerations. 

Type 2 Polycarbonate Safety Cap - This is used specifi cally 

in high heat environments. 

Bump Cap - Isn’t manufactured to AS/NZS1801 and generally 

used to protect against scrapes and minor knocks in domestic 

situations. 

Vented - Generally selected when ventilation to assist with 

cooling the head is required. 

Unvented - Is best used in areas where dust and chemical 

hazards exist.

Hearing Protection 

As noise induced hearing loss cannot be cured or restored 

it must be prevented from happening. It is important that all 

protection provided is to AS/NZS 1270:2002. 

Personal hearing protection is usually available in two forms: 

earplugs and earmuffs. 

Earplugs are usually made of silicone or foam and are 

inserted into the ear canal. Plugs are best for people who work 

all day in noise and who have to wear other personal protection 

equipment such as hard hats, masks or goggles. 

Earmuffs completely enclose the ear and are held in place 

against the side of the head by a headband. They are designed 

to block the sound waves from reaching the inner ear, this 

process is called attenuation. The higher the attenuation the 

more noise is blocked from reaching the inner ear. As not all 

ears are the same it is important to choose a hearing protection 

solution that suits the working environment, the comfort of 

the worker and promotes user acceptance and wearablility. 

Earmuffs are easier to put on and remove so are more suited 

to people who are exposed to noise intermittently. 

Under AS/NZS 1270:2002, the class system is a simple way 

to select a hearing protector appropriate to a noise exposure. 

Once the extent of the noise hazard has been established the 

correct hearing protection can be applied by using a table 

such as that below.

Earplugs 

Disposable earplugs are made from compressible foam and 

are rolled to shape by the user prior to insertion into the ear 

canal. After the earplug is inserted the earplugs expand for

Respiratory 

Making a Decision 

Choosing respiratory protection involves many different issues 

and does require some background knowledge. In general a 

workplace assessment would need to be carried out for the 

correct equipment to be chosen. 

When carrying out the assessment the following would need to 

be taken into consideration: 

• Knowledge of the airborne contaminants in the workplace. 

• Knowledge of respiratory devices including correct storage 

methods for filters and masks, respirator cleaning, respirator 

maintenance and assessment of fi t. 

• Knowledge of the effects of facial hair on the seal 

• Knowledge sufficient to identify a workplace hazard such as 

gas, dust or fumes 

• Knowledge of the Education process within the workplace, 

including written respiratory policy

formulation involving the release of free iso-cyanate during the 

reaction process always requires supplied air.

Our eyes are a precious and fragile asset which need protection 

from damage. It is vital that the correct type of safety eyewear is 

used and the product being provided in the workplace complies 

to AS1337:1992 which sets out the standards for eye protectors 

for industrial applications. 

It should be noted that if you are wearing eyewear which 

is marked as AS1067:2003 you will not receive any impact 

protection. This standard refers to sunglasses and general 

purpose glasses only and should not be used in a 

workplace environment. 

How do I know if I am wearing the correct eyewear? 

There are different types of eye protection that can be worn and 

it is important that the correct one is selected to give maximum 

safety. Below you will see the recommended applications for 

each style. 

Low Impact Spectacles 

These should only be worn in an environment where the main 

danger is from nuisance rather than impact. An example being 

an application such as sanding of woodwork where a lot of dust 

may be created, or an electrical pole worker who has an issue 

with glare. A low impact spectacle can be identifi ed due to the 

fact it has no lens marking. 

Medium Impact Spectacles 

Medium impact should be worn where there is a danger 

from medium velocity impact such as a nail from a nail gun. A 

medium impact spectacle that complies with AS1337:1992 will 

have the letter “I” marked on the lens if it is a tinted spectacle 

and “IO” if it has a clear lens. 

High Impact Protection 

High impact protection can only be achieved under the 

standards by wearing a suitably tested and identified full face 

shield. These should be worn when there is a danger of high 

velocity impact such as debris from an angle grinder. A Full face 

shield that complies to AS1337:1992 will have the letter “V” on 

the lens. 

Heat Protection 

There are many applications where molten metal or hot solids 

are an issue and it is recommended that for these applications 

that a suitable goggle or full face shield is used. Under the 

standard the lens will be marked with the letter “M” which 

is suitable for this application. 

According to government statistics there were over 6500 

claims for eye injuries in 2002 in Australia. It is important 

that eye protection is a priority in the workplace so check 

the following to make sure you are operating safely. 

Check that your eyewear has AS1337 stamped on it: 

• Make sure you are using the right level of protection 

for the application 

• Review the work area and assess the hazards 

• If you are unsure go to the maximum protection

Glove Selection 

• Always select gloves that are the correct size. If they are 

too small they may tear and be uncomfortable, if they are

Glove Inspection
