Care & Use<br />
General<br />
1. Keep a register of all slings in use.<br />
2. Ensure that the chain sling is precisely as ordered and all<br />
components and chain is clearly marked.<br />
3. Ensure that the manufacture and test certifi cate are in order.<br />
4. Ensure that the identification and Working Load Limit on the<br />
sling identification tag corresponds with the test information<br />
on the certificate.<br />
Care<br />
1. Lightly oil chain and fi ttings before prolonged storage.<br />
2. Never heat treat alloy chain or fittings.<br />
3. Store in a clean and dry place.<br />
Use<br />
1. Always visually inspect chain and fittings and ensure that<br />
they are free from damage or wear before use.<br />
2. Ensure that chain is free from twists and is protected from<br />
any sharp corners on loads.<br />
3. Chain, components and links should articulate freely to the<br />
adjacent links.<br />
4. Latches on hooks, where present should operate freely and<br />
seat properly without evidence of permanent distortion.<br />
Inspection<br />
1. Every chain link should be individually checked for<br />
evidence of wear, twisting, cracks, breaks, gauges,<br />
stretch, bend, weld splatter, discolouration from excessive<br />
temperature and the opening of hooks, any worn link should<br />
be measured to determine the degree of wear, which should<br />
not exceed that allowed for by the manufacturer.<br />
2. Oblong links and hooks should be inspected for any signs<br />
of wear and for any signs of distortion, such as widening of<br />
the hook throat opening.<br />
3. Coupler should be inspected for any signs of wear at their<br />
load bearing points, for excessive play of the load pin within<br />
the body halves and for impaired rotation of the body halves<br />
around the load pin. (Note – when reassembling a Coupler it<br />
is recommended that a new pin and stud assembly be used).<br />
4. Chain links or fittings found to have defects should be<br />
clearly marked to indicate rejection and withdrawn from<br />
service until properly repaired and proof tested. The results<br />
of each inspection and repair should be entered on the chain<br />
inspection record.<br />
Working Load Limit<br />
Do not use a chain in a manner that will exceed the WLL of the<br />
chain for the particular conditions of use.<br />
Hydrogen Embrittlement<br />
Hydrogen embrittlement is a dangerous condition that should be<br />
prevented.<br />
In certain environments, such as where acid pickling or<br />
cathodic cleaning is carried out, hydrogen embrittlement can<br />
occur in steels that are quenched and tempered, because of the<br />
absorption of atomic hydrogen generated at steel surfaces.<br />
Effects of Hot Environments<br />
The strength of all grades of chain is adversely affected by<br />
excessively elevated temperatures. Where the temperatures<br />
are likely to exceed 200°C, contact the manufacturer for the<br />
required reduction in working load limit.<br />
Low Temperature<br />
The user should seek advice from the manufacturer where<br />
chain is to be used at temperature colder than -10°C.<br />
Heat Treatment<br />
Chain in its fi nished condition should never be heat-treated.<br />
Corrosive Environment<br />
Grade T chain should never be used in acid or other corrosive<br />
environments. Other grades may be suitable for some corrosive<br />
environments, but the manufacturer or supplier should be<br />
contacted to determine the best grade of chain for the particular<br />
application.<br />
Galvanising<br />
Chains should never be hot-dip galvanised or electroplated,<br />
except by the manufacturer. Hot-dip galvanising can reduce the<br />
breaking load and WLL by 20 percent on some grades of chain.<br />
Extending the Useful Life<br />
The useful life of chains is considerable and may be easily<br />
maximised by observing the following precautions:<br />
(a) Care:<br />
• Never heat or heat-treat chain.<br />
• Lightly oil chain prior to prolonged storage.<br />
• Store chain in clean dry places.<br />
(b) Use:<br />
• Ensure that chain is free of any significant damage or wear.<br />
• Ensure that chain is evenly loaded in use.<br />
• Ensure that chain is free of twists and knots and is protected<br />
from any sharp corners when used.<br />
• Avoid crushing chain.<br />
Gunnebo Lifting – GrabiQ<br />
The all-inclusive chain sling system for coupling, shortening and<br />
lifting in Grade V(100).<br />
Our GrabiQ sling system is designed to improve and make your<br />
lifting as quick and easy as possible.<br />
GrabiQ means for example;<br />
• 25 % additional strength in the new Grade V(100) material.<br />
• All top assemblies consist of no more than three<br />
components.<br />
• Shortening function of chain legs is integral with no extra<br />
components.<br />
One of the main advantages of the GrabiQ system is that the<br />
work involved in connecting, adjusting and checking the lift<br />
takes less time and can be carried out more easily.<br />
The integral shortening function, for example, means that a<br />
four-part sling which previously required up to thirteen different<br />
top components now needs only three in the GrabiQ system.<br />
The German Berufsgenossenschaften (BG) launched in<br />
the beginning of 2004 a new specifi cation for Grade V(100)<br />
components, Gunnebo has passed this new specifi cation and<br />
was one of the fi rst companies in the world to do so.<br />

With C-lok as terminal fi tting the sling can be altered between<br />
choke hitch, basket hitch and leg extension with flattened links.<br />
With the fl exibility of the GrabiQ system a number of different<br />
lifting situations can be solved using the same GrabiQ sling.<br />
