Midlothian Police Department Neighbor to Neighbor The quality of life in any given neighborhood begins with the prospect that one must himself be a good neighbor. A good neighbor has many connotations; however, its meaning in this context is in regards to the proper maintenance and upkeep of one’s property. The police department plays an important role in attempting to maintain and improve the quality of life for all of the residents of the Village of Midlothian. To that end, a Neighborhood Policing Program was initiated within the department. The program simply creates a number of manageable zones to which an individual police officer is assigned. That officer must regularly check his zone for any issues that may affect the residents of that particular zone and initiate corrective action. The issues that may present themselves are varied and at times, numerous. They include but are not limited to: Street, sign and light repairs needed. Business security issues. Nuisance / Inoperable motor vehicles. Housing numbering or lack thereof. Trees and/or branches creating a potential hazard. Illegal signs (Political, Garage Sale, Advertising) Unsafe, improperly maintained and/or deteriorating buildings or structures. Failing to mow grass. Improper location/storage of garbage containers. Junk lying about or stored on property. The issues listed above are probably the most prevalent as documented by police reports. None of these issues, by the way, are specific to the Village of Midlothian, but to any community. In as far as residential properties are concerned, we understand that there may be any number of reasons for one or more of these issues to exist. The current economic and housing difficulties faced by residents of every community are only exacerbated by poorly maintained properties which adversely affects neighboring property values. It is not the intention of the Midlothian Police Department to punish any one individual by the issuance of citations but rather to inform residents so that they may take corrective action. The Midlothian Police Department is willing to work with any homeowner to ensure that their property is in compliance with all Village ordinances be it by educating homeowners of or about the Village ordinances or helping through referrals to appropriate agencies or departments. We, as neighbors all, can positively or adversely affect each other’s quality of life. We all need to ensure that the affect is a positive one, Neighbor to Neighbor. Yellow Dot Program Could Save Your Life The Yellow Dot program is designed to help crash victims, especially seniors, communicate with rescuers during the crucial "golden hour," the first 60 minutes after a serious crash that can make the difference between life and death for the critically injured. It is simple but effective: Participants in the free program receive a yellow dot to place on their rear window; it alerts emergency services personnel to look for a corresponding yellow folder in the glove box. That folder contains a photograph, their medical conditions, prescriptions and other vital information including blood type, known allergies, conditions, recent surgeries, preferred hospital and physician information. The forms are available at the Police Dept. or the Village Hall.
Midlothian Public Works Natalie Creek Bridge Replacement Over the last 50 years, Keystone, Karlov and Keeler have overflowed their banks bringing repeated flooding damage to residents nearby Natalie Creek. This long standing problem should be resolved with the completion of this much needed project. Recently all three streets have experienced collapses due to the deterioration of the corrugated metal pipe culverts that currently exist. Pouring dollars into temporary repairs was no longer an option and the village replaced the culverts with pre-cast bridges across the entire span of Natalie Creek thereby eliminating debris from blocking flow. The restrictive nature of the old culverts will no longer be a problem and while we still expect Natalie Creek to swell significantly during major storms we feel this improvement will not only bring flood relief to the immediate area, but also improve public safety as the streets will no longer be in danger of collapsing. 2011 Water Main Replacement Program Phase II After replacing the worst section of water main in the Village, along 147 th St from the Metra Station to Millard, the Village has begun the largest and most comprehensive project which encompasses several different locations. The Northeast Quadrant of the Village is the focus with much of this main being installed in the 1940’s. It undersized and has been an enormous expense to maintain with recurring main breaks causing constant interruptions in water service to many residents. The project is expected to last through the summer and while it sure to cause some traffic congestion the end result will be much more reliable service for the residents and the added bonus of new pavement for some of the worst streets in the Village. Water Meter Replacement Program The Village has completed this project replacing over 3600 water meters. These new meters will not only help the Village recover lost revenue, but save manpower and administrative costs. This new technology will eventually allow us to implement bi-monthly or monthly water bills to make them more affordable as the City of Chicago continues to pass on significant annual increases.
