A Spiritual Awakening
“Since joining the staff of St. John’s as the
Chaplain, I have kept coming back to one
question, “What do I wish now I had been
taught about God when I was younger?”
Whenever I think about this question, I think
about the adult “mentors” I had as a young boy.
I think of how I was affected whenever someone
explained God in a relevant or meaningful way
for my life, and I think about the tremendous
influence my peers had on my
faith life. And so these reflections
have guided what I’ve done here
at St. John’s. I have tried to set
up something of a “network” of spiritual programs and
services that provides three things:
1) personal mentoring at a small group-level that
prays, shares, and relevantly applies the scriptures
to ones’ lives; 2) services that draw worship out
of the Cadets and preaching that engages the
Cadets where they are and challenges them
to live lives of faith, love, and courage; and 3)
a new structure of Cadet leaders involved in
the Chapel who are empowered to practice a
leadership style that is based on their faith.”

Chapel Small Groups
What: A time for cadets to meet together, hang
out, talk about life and faith, and eat ice cream.
When: Monday nights after mess. Alternating
weekly between high school & middle school.
Where: Chaplain’s House
Movie Night
What: Watch a movie followed by discussion
When: Friday nights after mess
Where: JVH Theatre
Who: Any cadets interested (up to 20 at a time)
Alternates weekly between high school & middle
school.
Devotionals
What: Evening devotionals in barracks. A time
to relax and pray together at end of the day
When: Tuesday - Sage Hall Thursday - Jack
Vanier Hall from 2115-2130.
Where: Movie room in Sage Hall, and Rec Center
in Jack Vanier Hall.
Who: Any cadets interested (up to 15 at a time)
John Deters
The Pied Piper of Woodwork plies
his trade and with the talents of
his third and fourth hour class
members, beautifies the Vanier
Academic Center Library. The
new computer desks in the library
coordinate with many other
projects completed in the last few years: The Remy
Clem Library media check out center, Mrs. McCoy’s
work station, teacher desks, book shelves, table tops in
the art room, and the SJMSPA’s supply cabinet sitting
in the front hallway of the Vanier Academic Center.
Under Deters’ tutelage, Cadets learn woodworking
skills while producing projects that serve a utilitarian
purpose. A big thanks goes out to Mr. Deters and the
Cadets involved in the beautification of the Vanier
Academic Center.
