Dear Alumni and Friends of Elyria Catholic,
This year, Elyria Catholic High School proudly celebrates the 65th
Anniversary of its rich and hallowed history. It is a year we have dedicated
to our ever vigilant patroness, “Our Lady of Grace.”
For 65 years, EC has influenced and guided the lives of thousands of young men and women through
the charisms inherent in her mission. Make no mistake that this is indeed, a “memorable occasion!”
It is a milestone that should be cherished, embraced, and reflected upon by all who truly understand
the immeasurable sacrifice, efforts, generosity, and commitment necessary for the mission to remain
steadfast throughout some challenging times.
Many changes continue to occur as the school strives diligently to maintain high standards of academic
excellence and to provide ample opportunities for moral and spiritual growth as well as social
development. The completion of a “science initiative” designed to equip our students with new and
innovative resources for scientific analysis and investigation will prepare them for post-secondary
education in the areas of science. The advances in technology continue to improve and provide ample
opportunities for our students’ pursuits of intellectual curiosity and research.
New and diverse service program opportunities continue to provide firsthand understanding and
appreciation of our missions’ pillar of compassion. We have even embarked on reaching beyond the
boundaries of our county by enrolling international students from China, Poland, and South Korea.
These changes bring with them new challenges for sure but opportunities for substantial growth as well.
We have made substantial capital improvements necessary to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
Our last window has been purchased, the boiler is being prepped for winter, new desks, lab stools, and
even an elevator wheelchair lift for accessing the second floor has been recently installed.
Many good things are happening back at EC and they are happening quickly! The pulse of EC beats
vibrantly and there is plenty more to tell and to see. Perhaps the best way to “feel the EC pulse” is to
do what many alumni have been doing recently, they are coming back and seeing for themselves. The
words of one recent alum who had not been back to EC for over 50 years say plenty. “I like what I see,
the new technology and the many changes and capital improvements are unbelievable. I am most
impressed, however, by the cleanliness and upkeep of a building that is 65 years old. This is great!”
Never forget that a group of generous and committed alumni, parents, and friends can ensure
the future of Elyria Catholic. It is the only thing that ever has, and it the only reason why EC is
celebrating its 65th anniversary.
“Come back for a visit and see the work!”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Andrew G. Krakowiak
President

EC Hosts 65th Anniversary Mass
On Sunday, September 22, 2013, the EC alumni from the classes of 1950 through 1960 were invited back to EC
to celebrate mass along with the current students and their families in honor of EC’s 65th anniversary.
Our celebrant The Most Reverend Bishop A. James Quinn welcomed alumni and current students alike and
described them as living examples of the continuation of God’s work through their living the pillars of our school
mission.
Mass was followed by coffee and donuts for all and a light brunch was provided for the many special guests from
the 50’s who returned home for a visit. The students provided tours for many alums, some of whom had not
been back for 50 years or more. The event was without question a beautiful gathering of the past and present
that embodied perfectly “what really matters” here at Elyria Catholic High School.

Peace, Love, Joy…God’s gifts for you to use in your life…You choose.
Our new school year theme allows us to ponder our very existence with each decision we make in how
we live our lives. It is the culmination of these decisions that lead us through our earthly journey on
a daily basis. Our students can feel as though their lives are just a random chain of events, however,
if they recognize the immense power of making decisions using the gifts of love, joy and peace, they
will discover that life has so much more to offer when using these gifts for others. At any age we can
continue to utilize these gifts from God to do His work for so many we come in contact with, and that
is our focus this school year.
As alumni, we are well aware of how our Elyria Catholic High School experience has influenced decisions we have made in our
lives. I know this because of the numerous stories that so many alum share with me or others when they return to their alma
mater. Either to just stop by to get reacquainted with what is going on at the school, attending a play, sporting event or a class
reunion, the reminiscing of their own personal experiences add to the fabric of what was and is Elyria Catholic High School.
To define our purpose as a school community is an integral part of moving forward in the mission and vision of those who
established this catholic educational experience for us and for many to come.
I personally invite you to reconnect with our school’s purpose by stopping by and sharing
stories. It is through these accounts that we continue to grow and develop the spiritual
and educational richness of the gifts that God has blessed us with.
Elyria Catholic Celebrates a Legacy among Women
When Suzanne Camp (nee Lisicky) graduated from Ohio University with her teaching degree in 1974,
she didn’t know she would be returning to her alma mater. In fact, Camp had planned on becoming a
pharmacist and was prepared to take that career path upon graduating from Elyria Catholic in 1970. It was
not until her first post-secondary year at LCCC when she took a PE elective that she changed her mind. “I
have always loved playing sports and even played
intramurals all through college. The class at LCCC
was so interesting to me and I just knew teaching
was what I wanted to do.”
Starting her career at EC was a matter of being
at the right place at the right time. Camp recalls
interviewing for the open health and PE teaching
position the summer of ‘74 and started teaching the
following fall. That first year was a whirlwind for
her. Women’s athletics were just getting started at
the high school level everywhere, including Elyria
Catholic. On top of teaching full time, Camp was
in charge of coaching volleyball, basketball, tennis,
and track. She was also responsible for scheduling
games, getting officials for games and meets,
and making travel arrangements for the teams.
Essentially, Camp became EC’s women’s athletic
director. Rather than taking credit for running the
“EC was a part of my
life. The more years
I stayed, the more
comfortable I was.
The time just flew
by.”
show though, Camp defers to the many people who supported the fledgling program. “I remember the
support of the parents and staff, especially in those early years. They were so excited. People really rallied
around the idea. That first year in basketball, Bob Guinta and Lou Rotunda took me under their wing. They
were right with me in practice and helped me with running plays. As a result the teams did so well; it was
really successful. Those girls who were on those teams are my friends now.”
Camp admits she had no idea the athletic program would grow to be as big as it is now. While
other coaches came in to take over the teams she worked with that first year, Camp remained
the women’s athletic director and grew with the volleyball program as head coach for the next
25 years. It was a wise decision for everyone involved. In her time coaching the Lady Panthers,
Camp racked up 474 wins, multiple sectional and district championships, and even a birth at
the state championship in 1993. Camp’s winning record, stellar coaching, and relentless work
ethic earned her a spot in the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame to which she was inducted in 2008.
It comes as no surprise that those early years are among Camp’s fondest memories. Although she says
each one of her 38 years at EC was always meaningful for her. Other coaching opportunities presented
themselves, but Camp was happy to stay put. “EC was a part of my life. The more years I stayed, the more
comfortable I was. The time just flew by.”
Camp is humble about the legacy she has left at Elyria Catholic. She shies away from taking credit for
building EC’s women’s athletic program, and brushes off the notion that she was and continues to be an
inspiration to her students, teams, and peers. Rather, she merely shares the joy that her years at Elyria
Catholic have brought her. “The sense of community, faith, and family at Elyria Catholic carried over into my
teaching and coaching. Every year was special to me.” Currently, Camp is teaching health and PE at a fine
arts high school in Westlake, Ohio. No doubt, her students, both past and present, will attest that a part of
what made their time in high school so special was being taught and coached by such a humble and giving
leader and role model; a true legacy among women.

EC Partners with
Cambridge Institute
In the 2011-12 school year Elyria Catholic explored
the options of expanding the schools population to
include more international students. As a result of that
research, we decided to partner with the Cambridge
Institute, a company that is located in Massachusetts
and has international offices throughout China. The
Elyria Catholic admissions department interviewed
over 35 applicants from across China. The interviews
produced five new international students. These young
men and women have entered Elyria Catholic as fully
admitted students and have plans to stay in the United
States, become Elyria Catholic graduates, and go on to
American universities.
Elyria Catholic is proud to welcome into the Class of 2015: Jack Cui and Jordan Xu; in the Class of 2016 Cindy Chen,
and in the Class of 2017 Jack Chen and Angelina Yang. In addition to the five Chinese students, Elyria Catholic is also
hosting two additional exchange students, Agnes Galeziowska from Poland and Ji-Hye Lee from Korea. The transition for
young people to come across the world and become part of a completely new society and way of life is quite challenging.
These students have displayed great enthusiasm to work and learn both inside and outside the classroom. They are
becoming more incorporated into American culture and the educational system every day. Elyria Catholic is proud
to have these students as part of our community. We cannot wait to see the impact these students will have on their
classmates and the EC community.
Keeping an Elyria Catholic Education Accessible
Andrew Krakowiak, EC President, was determined to help a
young scholarship student pursue his dream of attending Elyria
Catholic High School. The student has cerebral palsy and is
unable to safely climb the stairs to the second floor where many
of the classrooms, the media resource center and computer lab
are located. “Access to the second floor has been a problem
for any student on crutches, and even some parents and elderly
alumni” said Mr. Krakowiak.
Elyria Catholic is extremely grateful for the $30,000 facilities
grant that the school received from the Diocesan Rooted in Faith-
Forward in Hope Campaign to install a hydraulic wheelchair
lift. In addition to the facilities grant provided by the campaign,
funds for completion of the project were made by the Office
of Catechetical Formation and Education, and the Ridge Tool
Company in Elyria.

Alternative Spring Break Trip
A group of 32 EC students and four chaperones traveled to Toms River, New Jersey on an alternative spring break trip
to assist rescue efforts following Hurricane Sandy last spring. The group’s efforts focused on two key projects. First,
students worked on an eco-reclamation project to help restore key parts of the shoreline that were eroded as a result of
the hurricane. The project largely involved replanting grass, trees, and shrubbery that
were washed away in the storm but are essential to the local environment. Second,
students worked on houses that were damaged during the storm but still had not been
properly repaired.
“The students were very excited about the opportunity to live their faith by serving those
hit hardest by this natural disaster,” notes Michael Wisnor, Assistant Principal at Elyria
Catholic High School. “The students paid their own way to be a part of this trip, and
I think that speaks volumes about the type of young men and women we have at the
high school.”
Kasey Bilancini, a senior participating for the third straight year in the program, could
think of no better way to spend her spring break. “I’ve been amazed at the impact that a relatively small group of students
can have on a community that is struggling to rebuild. Although it meant missing a week of softball, I knew that it was
more important for me to spend my spring break helping those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy,” said Bilancini.
Wisnor added, “We are always looking for new ways for students to live the Gospel
message in their everyday lives, and this was a great opportunity for everybody, students
and chaperones alike, to provide comfort and assistance to those in need.”
Elyria Catholic extends its heartfelt
gratitude to the FCSLA (First Catholic
Slovak Ladies Association) for their
generous support of our Alternative
Spring Break Program.
EC Partners with Neighborhood Alliance
Over the course of his first six months as the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has emphasized the need
to build a culture based on encounter. EC students have taken that message to heart through a new partnership with
Neighborhood Alliance.
“The idea of the program is to help our students encounter those most in need, consistent with Pope Francis’ message
to the Catholic Church,” said Mike Wisnor, assistant principal of Elyria Catholic and one of the program coordinators.
The program, which is planned to run one day per month is a four-pronged collaborative effort, with each class at Elyria
Catholic being called upon to contribute.
The seniors participate in the Seniors 4 Seniors program, traveling to homebound seniors’ homes to visit them and help
with home clean-up and light construction projects. The juniors are involved with the Sunday Supper Society, sophomores
will participate in the Christmas of Caring and freshman will put together welcome kits for the Haven Center.

Three Elyria Catholic Students Selected
for the Mercy Healthcare Academy
Elyria Catholic High School once again partnered with Mercy
Health Partners to offer EC students the opportunity to participate
in an internship program through the Mercy Healthcare Academy.
This year, the following three students were selected through a
rigorous screening process: Daniel Dovala, Danielle Dziak and
Julia Carroccio.
The program is designed to introduce high school students
interested in the healthcare field to the rigors and realities of the profession.
In order to qualify for consideration, students must maintain a minimum 3.8 GPA and have an interest in
working in healthcare. Students are exposed to a variety of rotations, including emergency care, primary
care, surgery, physical therapy and spiritual care.
EMH Award for Academic Excellence
Four incoming freshman were awarded an EMH Award for
Academic Excellence Scholarship. The scholarship, generously
provided by the EMH Regional Health Care System, is awarded
to incoming freshman who place at the top of their class on the
placement exam. The scholarship is renewable for all four years
while attending Elyria Catholic High School.
2012-2013 Student Car Raffle
This year, the decision was made to “spice up” the traditional student car raffle! Instead of selling books of car
raffle tickets, the students sold a monthly calendar that contained cash prizes each day with a new car as the
grand prize. The lucky winners had their choice of a 2013 Buick Verano donated by Nick Abraham ’60 of Nick
Abraham’s Automall Buick-GMC-Elyria Ford-Nissan, a 2013 Ford Fusion S donated by Jim Herrick ’70 of Liberty
Ford Vermilion or a 2013 Honda Accord donated by Jack Matia ’75 of Jack Matia Honda.
The new format was a huge success, raising more than
$87,000 for student scholarships! The grand prize was
drawn on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Spring Gala.
events
Elyria Catholic’s “Night of Celebration Gala and Auction” was held on Saturday, April 27, 2013. The
coliseum came to life as our guests enjoyed cocktails, a catered dinner, auction items, raffles and live
entertainment by the band Outta Dodge. Perhaps the highlight of the night was the honoring of Mr. Earl
Mahl and Mr. Ryan Gorney ’99 for their outstanding contributions to Elyria Catholic.
Mr. Earl Mahl together with his late wife Helen, raised eight children: Thomas ‘61,
Patricia ‘65, Kenneth ‘71, Gerald, Theodore ‘74, Timothy ‘74, Lawrence ‘78, and
Pamela ’80. Mr. Mahl has been a bingo volunteer for more than 40 years and was
instrumental in the building of the first concession stand at EC. In 2007, the Mahl
children established the Earl and Helen Mahl Scholarship Fund in honor of their
parents. Thanks to the generosity of the Mahl family, the scholarship now provides
financial assistance to four students each year.
Ryan Gorney has volunteered his time and expertise to Elyria Catholic since 2002,
assuming the role of head of technology. Ryan dedicates over 200 unpaid hours of
his time to the school annually. His accomplishments and ongoing contributions to
his alma mater are endless. Ryan and his wife Kara have two daughters, Samantha
and Katherine and a son Jon.
The generosity of those in attendance was
overwhelming, as we raised more than
$65,000 for the school and an additional
$22,000 for the renovation of our science
labs. The labs now feature a whiteboard
wall, new stools, new laptops, laptop stands,
resurfaced work stations, new windows and
blinds.
Jim Herrick, Class of 1970, showed his extreme generosity through the bidding of his son Mike Herrick
’02, by making a $20,000 donation for the naming rights to the Elyria Catholic coliseum for the next
five years. The coliseum now adorns a large banner to show our thanks and gratitude to Mr. Herrick and
Liberty Ford.
We also extend a huge “thank you” to our Elyria Catholic alumni, Mr. Nick Abraham ’60, Mr. Jim Herrick
’70, Mr. Jack Matia ’75 and their respective dealerships for their donation to the EC car raffle. The
excitement mounted as the winning ticket for the 2013 car raffle was drawn at the event. The Spring
Gala provides an excellent opportunity for our alumni, parents and friends to come back to the school
and witness firsthand the great things happening at EC.
Please plan to join us for the 2014 Spring Gala to be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014
as we honor Mr. Hal Minnich ‘53 and Mr. Ron Zidek ‘63 for their years of service to
Elyria Catholic through the Dads’ Boosters organization.

Support for the
Elyria Catholic Fund
Each year, Elyria Catholic High School relies
upon the generosity of our parents, alumni, and
friends to support our mission in the form of a
commitment to the Elyria Catholic Fund.
Participation in the Elyria Catholic Fund is
paramount in helping to keep EC’s tuition
affordable for so many students and their
families who aspire to the call to become people
of excellence, compassion, and faith, while
celebrating the traditions and community unique
to Elyria Catholic High School.
In addition to the increase in participation in
the 2012-2013 Elyria Catholic Fund drive, our
efforts were bolstered by leadership support from
members of our President’s Leadership Council,
who set the standard for strong participation and
increased giving among donors.
On behalf of the Elyria Catholic Fund, we thank
and salute all of our donors listed on the following
pages for their generosity and support.
A key component of Elyria Catholic High School’s success
is the dedication and support of its parents. In addition to
donating many volunteer hours by working bingo, concession
stands and staffing special events, Elyria Catholic parents
offer direct support through their participation in the Elyria
Catholic Parents’ Annual Fund.
