From Nottingham
with love…
is this where you are #meanttobe?
On a beautiful summer’s evening, the
University Park campus at the University of
Nottingham hosted a gathering of its
Nigerian community. A community
comprised of staff, students and alumni
who have made Nottingham home, as well
as staff visiting from
Nigerian universities and
UK staff who are involved in
partnerships and visits with
Nigerian institutions.
“This was a most
wonderful event, bringing
together Nigerian students
and academic visitors and was
an opportunity to brief
everybody on the progress we
are making in engaging with
higher education institutions
across Nigeria,” said Professor
Farouk Shakib who hosted
the event in his position of
Associate Pro-Vice-
Chancellor (International)
Africa & Middle East. “I was pleased to hear
about how well our students are doing in their
academic work, many of whom reflected so
positively on their experience of studying in
Nottingham.”
Having chosen to study at a truly global
university, the Nigerian student population at
the University of Nottingham is one of the
largest in the UK, with over 250 students.
Many of these students are members of the
University of Nottingham Nigerian Students
Society (UNNSS), which
helps students to network
and make the most of their
time at the University. It
helps new students settle in
by showing them around
town and have a rich events
agenda throughout the year,
which include Independence
Day celebrations and the
WAZOBIA Cultural Festival,
among others.
Victor Chukwuemeka
Uduezor (right), President of
UNNSS, reminded students at
the event of their
responsibility to project a
positive image as they act as
ambassadors for Nigeria during their time at
the University and in the United Kingdom.
Representing his Excellency the Nigerian
High Commissioner, Senior Counsellor Francis
Enya encouraged the Nigerian community at
