Message from the General Manager With growing public and government awareness of environmental issues, local councils are playing an increasingly important role in environmental management. The Hunters Hill <strong>Sustainability</strong> Plan outlines Council’s direction on environmental issues – helping us steer the community towards a sustainable future. The Plan clarifies the role of Council, the community and outside agencies, as well as setting clear objectives and targets to be met within specific timeframes. The <strong>Sustainability</strong> Plan will become an integral part of our long-term strategic planning process, ensuring decision-making is consistent with Council’s Ecologically Sustainable Development responsibilities and the plan’s objectives. Education is a key component of the Plan, as we look to extend future environmental education programs to a wider audience, and foster knowledge and skills for sustainable behaviour. The four major outcomes the Plan wishes to achieve are: 1. Improved integration of environmental education with other tools and strategies used by organisations to promote sustainable development. 2. Expansion of partnerships with environmental education providers to enhance the quality and reach of their programs. 3. Enhanced training, professional development and other support available for council employees, volunteers, residents and local business owners. 4. Increased active and informed participation by local residents, volunteers and business owners in creating a sustainable future.
